​I know what the code says.  I just think since we live in a world where women can serve on submarines, etc. then they can remove their hats.  Equal rights type of thing.

​Im sure that Flag Code was written BEFORE women were allowed to serve in service like they are now. But agreed. If women want equal rights, it should be across the board. Not pick & choose which rights they want to be equal too. I see long haired women officiating too. Make them cut it. Make women take us men out on dates too while they're at it. lol

The basic tenet of our freedom is that you are free to do what you like so long as you aren't hurting anyone else or infringing upon their rights.

With this standoff, I see it as demeaning to the anthem and the game.  There's no place for it.

There were women in the military.

Best way to put an end to that is when the home team takes the field, tell the catcher to call them in and send it down.  When asked why, you can tell them that they wasted all of their warm-up time standing on a line. 

As far as whether or not I'm offended...I'm a submariner - we don't get offended.  If anything, we take it up a notch. @umpstu

​I stand by that statement.  I don't mean all the people who came to watch feel offended.  I mean that the players are being disrespectful to them, whether or not the spectators perceive it that way  If someone spits on the flag in a forest and there's no one there to see it, it's still disrespectful.

I've seen two of these in college games this season.  They were short lived.  A loud "Get in the dugout"got everyone moving.

Like others, I'm not particularly offended by anything other than the BS that the players are bringing into my kitchen.  Not a way to start an 18-inning day.

As far as the vet / non-vet thing -- I'm not a vet and I have a great deal of respect for veterans and their service, but it's as much my anthem as it is a veteran's.

What I see most is it is the non vets who claim it to be disrespectful to the people who have served.  I see more of this type of attitude when it comes to splaying so called patriotic messages.  Like they know what is being disrespectful to vets is.  That is what I don't get at all.  I have my thoughts about it, but those are mine.

Every time I see a thread like this I wonder why y'all are wasting your time arguing what could be a very personal topic for some people and for others, something they don't even think about, but here's my bit anyways.

I'm an Army-bound Air Force res/aux airman. Captain of both an armed and a close order drill team. My great-grandfather was a Navy linguist in the Korean War. My brother is a future Puddle Pirate. Closest family friend was a captain in the Army, flying helicopters.
Veterans don't own the flag.
Veterans don't own the Star Spangled Banner.
Veterans don't own America.
I highly doubt ball players wake up and say "let's go offend veterans."
Get offended if you want, but that's your decision.

N​ot being disrespectful to me. So if I don't feel disrespected the players aren't disrespecting me.

BTW - the anthem is over. They stood as they should have for the anthem. They did not disrespect it. This is a following action, not part of the anthem.

The standoff itself doesn't offend me. The anthem is over. I do think it is ridiculous for professional players to be doing it. Seems rather bush league, like something that would be done at a small high school where no one knows any better. 

What does bother me is five players standing out of the dugout while the pitcher is warming up. Everyone else should be in the dugout.

So last night I was at the Pirates-Padres game (Go Bucs!) and did witness a lot of offensive stuff from folks during the national anthem.  The main thing was people still walking around like nothing was happening and it wasn't just a couple of people but several hundred trying to get to their seats.  Now that was offensive.  The concession workers even stopped what they were doing while the anthem played but I saw plenty of folks oblivious to their surroundings.

 

Edit to add:  It took a lot for me to not snap back into my Marine Corps days and eat these peoples souls for dinner.
