I took one shot to the bicep this year, LL majors District game, it hurt, but not terrible, though I can't imagine what it will feel like from HS velocity.

Can you recommend some 'low profile' protection independent of the chest protector? Thanks.

Sorry dude! Just man up.  It doesn't hurt that much for that long.  I caught one in right bicep at elbow that stuck there last season, HS varsity.  Just a bruise.  Cool baseball stitch marks for a couple days.

You're going to get hit in places that aren't protected from time to time.

We all have battle wounds from plate work. It's part of the gig.

In fact, I think there was a thread on here w/ pictures of wounds.

An umpire is a guy that wears $500 of equipment and gets hit by baseballs where he has $.05 of sunscreen on.

And a bunch of crocodile tears to go with the bruise. Did you get a tissue from the catcher?

You don't need to worry about hits to the arm unless it starts turning black right away. Just a bump. If you can't handle it, don't work plate. :shrug:

@umpstu

No tears.  An oooraaah.  Catcher was quite happy with me as runner was stealing and had to kill the play and make the runner go back to first since I caught the ball with my arm crook and prevented him from making a play.  Which, of course, he probably had no chance of making since he didn't actually catch the ball.

I have a collection of bruise pictures I have suffered. Part of the game.

A collection that we have all at least seen parts of once and never wish to see again, TYVVVVVVM. :wave:

Just upgrade to a Kevlar lined Force 3 balloon chest protector, it is the slimmest balloon on the market, the only downside is due to the density of the Kevlar it is on the heavy side.

When I get nailed on the forearm, I'll use a McDavid sleeve over the area until it's healed up. It's one thing to take that shot, but I once took one to the same spot within a week, and just couldn't continue. When I do wear the sleeve, I'll wear a long sleeve shirt over it, so you guys won't make fun of me.

Make sure your elbows are tucked in, and bicep shots become rare. But, like others have said, it's one of the exposed, non-boney, areas we give up for style and comfort.

Believe it or not we still have a guy around here who uses a balloon protector; works HS JV stuff. He's not old either, maybe late 30's. He's a strange guy who thinks he's smarter than everyone else and is also one of the worst umpires I've ever had the displeasure of working with; he also umpired a few of my games when I was coaching HS ball years ago. He's the only official I have blocked on Arbiter. As a bonus he also works football and basketball; he's also one of the worst basketball officials I ever worked with.

@kylejt, you wear long sleeved shirts? Don't your partners make fun of you?
