Poor guy. He asks a serious question and everyone makes fun of him.

Who would've thunk it?

Hunter Wendelstedt wears bicep protection.

I guess once you make it to the show, it doesn't matter if people think you're a sissy? For that matter, it probably doesn't matter what people think at all, about anything!

When I get nailed on the forearm, I'll use a McDavid sleeve over the area until it's healed up. It's one thing to take that shot, but I once took one to the same spot within a week, and just couldn't continue. When I do wear the sleeve, I'll wear a long sleeve shirt over it, so you guys won't make fun of me.  Make sure your elbows are tucked in, and bicep shots become rare. But, like others have said, it's one of the exposed, non-boney, areas we give up for style and comfort.

@kylejt, you wear long sleeved shirts? Don't your partners make fun of you?

No long sleeved jersey in your bag, Ken? I like, oddly enough, The Official's Choice model in black. I've also got a fully lined +POS, that may be the finest umpire garment ever made.

I love a long sleeve behind the plate. Clean. Crisp. Sporty. Gotta be pretty cold and windy for me to wear jacket when working plate.

@kastrunk. Eff em. Wear what you think you need. Nobody is making fun of you. (As far as you know. Haha!)

I have a couple of assignors that discourage long sleeve jerseys. Definitely no long sleeved undershirts with a short sleeved shirt on top. For me, if it's cold enough for a long sleeved shirt, I'll wear a thick Mock turtle with a jacket over it.

I'm grateful for the modicum inclusiveness, and really, I had no intention of going against the grain. I don't have enough experience to know if I'd even LIKE to wear something on my biceps as I have a very low annoyance threshold, and the more gear you wear, the more annoyed you'll tend to be (I have enough experience to know that). I simply assumed (big mistake) that at higher levels, where the ball tends to cause more pain, guys might find ways to minimize it where possible.

But for long sleeves, I've wore one on the bases and behind the plate, a quarter zip pullover (white shoulder stripe) as well, and I have difficulty understanding why assignors would look down upon a properly worn, professional looking shirt or jacket, unless it's over 60 or 65 degrees of course.

I only ever wear a long sleeve behind the plate when it's those in-between temperatures. I think it looks better than wearing a jacket, and it's easier to move around in as well.

Why are long sleeved jerseys thought of as forbidden on the bases? I've never understood, nor obeyed that unwritten rule.

Is is just a matter of the MLB guys not doing it (I think it is), so it must be bad?

It's a great choice for certain temperature ranges, and sure are comfortable.

Personally, I try to avoid long sleeved polo shirts at all times in my wardrobe selection. I think it makes you look like a husband sitting on a bench waiting on your wife to finish her mall walking. But that's just me...

That said, I do wear one on the plate when necessary.

Serious question: If you're going to use bicep protection, why not get full body pads that cover forearms/thighs, etc like a hockey goalie?

The long sleeve shirt while working the plate is my favorite uniform item. I think they look good.

Just don't pull up the sleeves like a lot of guys do when they wear the long sleeve polo!

Right? Like what's the point of wearing long sleeves if you just roll them up? All the ASA guys here do that.

But rolling them up gives me a chance to show off my rippling Popeye forearms! Hahahaha

Seriously, I hate that SH*# too. No 3/4 sleeves in umpiring. That's for players.

So are the rippling forearms.

Dang MidAmUmp, that's hilarious. As a woman who has taken several shots behind the palate (including a fractured arm, but kept working b/c my partner was a weak POS), maybe you should just tell a guy to grow a set. If I can, I'm sure he can. :)
