It's big news because gay people have notoriously been treated like scum and denied their rights as US citizens. Found out earlier this year that Dale Scott was gay from a gay minor league umpire. It's here. It's been here and it will always be here, like it or not. And they are constitutional rights.

no one is talking about rights here ....let's make sure this doesn't get too political ( NOT directed at you @umpstu necessarily) ...just being preemptive ....

First of all ... WOW, I had no idea, and would have never guessed.   Good for him!

It's just that I live in Palm Springs area and know of partners who have lived together for 50 plus years and yet can't make life decisions about each other, or receive SS benefits or health benefits. That's not fair. And the reason you didn't know that Dale Scott was gay is because most gay people live ordinary, boring lives like you and I. He just has a much cooler job.

Good for him. I'm sure this will rile up a certain segment of the population for no good reason.

Here is another article:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/mlb-umpire-dale-scott-comes-out-as-gay-in-quietest-way-possible/ar-BBgfgKY

Not that I am the most perceptive fellow on the planet, but I did take note of the caption in the photo that accompanied the article in Referee.

Good for him.  I am glad to see that MLB has judged him solely on his ability to umpire.

Here we go...

All this is going to turn into is a political or social debate.

This may have been the worst kept secret in the umpiring world.

Move on.

Amen! This shouldn't even have been brought up!!!

Big long article that still doesn't explain why he doesn't seem to own a black plate shirt.

Now that's funny

Well I was relieved to see MSN had this too. You may remember Outsports did not "out" another umpire incorrectly, but heavily made an incorrect insinuation.

But, good for him. This is the 21st century and people need to not worry so much about the personal lives of others.

Though I will check out Twitter tonight and see what Dave Pallone has to say.

This comment on the Deadspin article made me chuckle...

Coming out as gay seems like a pretty drastic way for an umpire to cover up that his eyesight is so bad he mistakenly thought he was in a relationship with a woman all these years...

Dave Pallone's story is precisely why we didn't publish Dale's story when he first introduced Mike, subtly, in the Referee feature: yes, he was telling the officiating community and yes it would be a milestone, but it still didn't seem right to pry. The MLB media guide, which has listed Dale as "single" for as long as I can remember, would have to change first (for instance), and Dale would have to want this story told. I'm glad to see Outsports agreed to wait until after the postseason awards finished before running with it, which is what Dale wanted.

Yes. How amusing. :shakehead:

I read this and thought to myself, "Ok, now what?"....it was non-news to me, and should be to almost everyone else.

Especially given their track record with umpires.

We (pro umpires...even us MiLBers...) knew in the 1990's.  Also, he is not the only one.

I'm happy for Dale that he feels comfortable being able to be more public about it than he already was among baseball people.

Former.  Now I work college, legion and some high school.  If you want to track me down, LOL, my first year in pro ball, I was partnered in the New York-Penn League with the newly announced executive director of PBUC.
