Poor quality JV double header on Saturday ....  Game 2, I have the dish (btw.... first game was 22-3 VT).  Innings and outs don't matter ....

VT up to bat, R2 and R3 ....

Pitch comes in and gets away from F2, he scrambles and grabs it and looks to R3 who was tempted to score but retreats ... F2 throws the ball that procedes to hit the batters bat sitting on his shoulder square in the box, ... he NEVER moved ....I instantly hear "INTERFERENCE" ...just as I "safe" and say "that's nothing"...

"he's got to move"

"no he doesn't"

"yes he does"

"Greg, ...he's in the box, and didn't interfere, he doesn't have to move, that's nothing"

and that was it.....

but  you heard the team and the coaches discussing it a couple batters later .....  "it doesn't matter, he's got to get out of the way"

Also,... HT was down 12 -2  in game 2 at this point....

Oh well ...

A similar type play at my sons 9 year old Dizzy Dean game Saturday.  High school kids umpiring, have not had much more than a couple hours training.  It's rec ball, and the kids umpiring are at least trying to do a good job.  Ball gets past the catcher and R3 comes in to score.  Our 3rd base coach is yelling at our batter to move as the runner is approaching the plate.  He never moves from his position in the batters box.  The ball went far enough away from the catcher that the runner scored before he even got to the ball.  No throw was made, the pitcher didn't cover the plate for a throw.  Our team is cheering the run scored.  Out of no where a few seconds later you hear from the umpire, "that's obstruction, the runner is out!"  I don't know our coach very well to know if he knows baseball rules or not.  All our parents know I'm an umpire.  So I can see that they are now all looking at me to see if I'm going to question the call.  I was keeping score, and I never looked up from the scorebook.  Our coach didn't argue and the game went on with no problem.  I was actually somewhat happy the umpire knew the batter not moving out of the way could potentially be a problem.  He did confuse obstruction with interference, and the batter didn't actully interfere with anything.  After the game my son asks me about the play.  He goes to a lot of my games and loves to hang out with my partners.  Already asking my assignors when he can start calling games.  He asks, "Dad, if they didn't even try to get Blake out why does it matter if D.J didn't move?"

Good call.

Ignore howler monkeys, if possible.

they weren't too bad ...you could tell it was more of an education for them ....they sounded more confused than mad ...

13U travel ball.  Right handed batter.  R2 stealing.  Catcher starts to throw and stops -- batter didn't move.  Coach yells at F2to just throw it and hit the batter in the head . . . . :wow:

Most folks say the once the ball gets past the catcher the batter DOES have to get out of the way.

Most folks may say this, but the rules do not... :)   It is possible for a batter to legally stay in the batter's box without interfering or hindering any attempted play on R3 coming home.  Advisable?  No, but possible.

I am somewhat in this camp. There is a point where he can not just stand there. Similar to the recent game-ending interference call in MLB on a popup where the batter just camped in the box.

Actually, the rules do support Rich's point, depending on your judgment of 'reasonably vacate':

A batter shall not: (NFHS 7-3)

ART. 5 . . . Interfere with the catcher's fielding or throwing by:

a. leaning over home plate,

b. stepping out of the batter's box,

c. making any other movement, including backswing interference, which hinders actions at home plate or the catcher's attempt to play on a runner, or

d. failing to make a reasonable effort to vacate a congested area when there is a throw to home plate and there is time for the batter to move away.

There was no throw in the OP.

There was a throw in the OP, but we don't know to whom, but we do know R3 was retreating to 3rd so there was no throw to home so 7-3-5(d) is not appropriate.

there was a throw as the OP says, but it's a throw back to F5 to chase R3 all the way back to 3rd.  There was NOT a play at home....R3 bluffed, and F2 (ill-advised) threw to F5 to chase him back.  The ball hit the bat resting on the batters shoulder standing perfectly in the box.  The ball bounced off the bat, and F2 took 4 steps or so and picked it up.

Very different. In that game, the batter hit the ball. He is now a batter-runner and it is now his responsibility to run, not stand in the box and hinder the catcher. In the OP he's still the batter, standing still in the box where he belongs.
