For those of you who don't get paid at the plate, how long do you usually have to wait before you receive a check? Does your association tell the schools that they have to have checks mailed in a certain amount of time? Some of the schools around here are really good about getting checks out, others it may take 3 weeks to a month to get paid.

Same here: sometimes less than a week, sometimes more than a month.

Schools have different policies and procedures for paying officials. Our association doesn't get involved because doing so would be pointless.

Our school board takes roughly a month to send us our checks while private schools send checks out usually within a week of the game.

It's all over the map.  Sometimes it takes over a month, sometimes same day via Refpay.  I worked a game yesterday and came home to check my refpay account and the funds were already there - took me by surprise.

In Northwest Mississippi schools have fallen into 1 of 3 categories for me this year.  1.Those that pay by check the day of the game(DeSoto County Schools, South Panola), 2.Those that pay using ref pay(Senatobia, Lafayette) 3.Those that pay by check in the mail within a couple weeks of game(Independence).

Our association invoices most of our contracted schools and the association pays us. Normally checks are written by our treasurer semimonthly to those that show up to meetings. Others get their checks when the associaton mails them out

Our HS association and the JUCO College group pay us via ref pay  2 times a season.   In the middle and at the end.  The rec. groups i'm in pay once a month through check or ref pay.  The days of cash games around here are getting to be less and less.  Everyone wants to pay electronically (END Of Month) Of course our tourney checks are paid after the last games worked on a weekend.

In my area of KY, the usual arrangement is you fill out a voucher and w-9, then the school will mail the checks out.  Depends upon the school district, but typically we will get our checks in the mail within two weeks. I've been to a couple of schools this year that have the checks ready on game day, but that's rare these days.  Seems to work out okay, generally.  There are a couple of schools which are notorious for lagging, but they are the exception.

I do know that one school this winter (I also do basketball) was taking over a month to get game checks out.  To top it off, many of them weren't signed properly (I think they were supposed to have dual signatures and didn't) and the checks were returned.  Luckily, I didn't have that school this year, but I heard it was a mess.

Our association bills at the end of the high school season, and we get a check shortly thereafter.

We service 43 schools (about 30 HS districts).  In all cases, it is a voucher (and sometimes a W-9) and then you get a check in 5 days and up to 2 months.  My home district is usually 2 months.  I have been paid for football when I worked a wrestling gig, wrestling when I worked a baseball game, and I can always count on summer funds when I work baseball/softball.

One district (6 high schools) tried to introduce Refpay for all sports and the officials' response was so negative, they changed their mind.

Just shows how resistant people are to change.  I love Refpay.

So do I.  When that district did it, I loved going in and having my check deposited...No trip to the bank, this was before the phone deposit apps.

I'm not sure why there would be a lot of push back to ref pay.  You can either have a debit card on which the schools put your funds, or have the funds direct deposit to your checking account.  I like to keep my umpire money seperate so I have the debit card.  No worry with waiting for checks in the mail, taking them to deposit or cash, etc.  Unless I am getting paid cash or check on the spot I like ref pay much better than waiting for a check in the mail.  Most of my high school games are called in one county with 8 high schools.  They currently all pay by check on the day of the game.  We have been told they are going to ref pay next school year.  I wish they wouldn't change, but it's not going to make me stop calling games there.

Guys were worried that they would be getting a 1099 from Refpay if all the schools used it..  A lot of old timers, especially basketball, football and softball.  They refused to understand anything new.

It was a bad roll out too.  I found out when I called the school because I hadn't been paid in 4 weeks.  They got back to me a week later and told me it was out on RefPay.  First I heard about it.  Downloaded my money and was very happy with the actual process.

The only people who should be concerned about getting a 1099 are those who conceal their officiating income from the IRS. Neither association policy nor school payment procedures should not cater to tax cheats.

In So. Indiana we are always paid before a game for high school ball.  We report to the gate/ticket-taker and they hand us our checks.  We are so short on guys that I can't imagine what would happen if we had to wait until the end of the month or season to get paid.  In summer ball we sometimes have to go to the concession stand after the game if we are getting paid in cash, but it is ALWAYS the same day.

North Jersey is all over the place with getting paid. Most use a voucher system while there are about 20% that have a check for me on game day. Today, at my second game I received an envelope with cash. Gotta love that! Urban districts are notoriuosly slow. This February I received a check for a volleyball match I worked in September. Almost all travel, rec and other ball is cash or check at the plate.

A simple spread sheet helps me track who has and who has not paid.

RefPay is great.  My first few games this year I received a check and then had a game at a school that uses RefPay.  I logged in and was somewhat surprised at how much was in that account.

One thing I keep in my umpire briefcase is a few signed copies of a W-9.  If I am working at a school for the first time, I fold one up and stick in my pocket.  When the site manager has us sign for payment, I hand them the completed form.  Saves a bunch of time and they appreciate the gesture.

High schools around here uses RefPay.  The non-high school league I work for uses auto-deposit. The money for the games I work this week will show up in my checking account next week. That's for all levels of play from 10U up to college.

Doesn't RefPay cost money to set up an account? Like a $25 fee?

If so, that would $#% me off.

Not the official.
