From the looks of that ball-4 call, he either missed a pitch or gave a FU call. From the sound of the crowd, it may have been a FU call. There probably was lots to chew on post-game about how he got himself into that situation, but even so,

No telling...there have been a time or two that coach/spectators thought that I was F'g with them when I hadn't even thought about doing so...yet.

The homeplate umpire probably shouldn't interact with the crowd.....even if it was just him making a gesture on where the last pitch was.  Other than that, I thought they handled it great.  I can make an assumption that HP Umpire was approaching the coach for an ejection but his partner shut down the game before it could happen.  At a very minimum I would have F1, F2 and HC ejected.  Ironic how the parents were very quiet after it happened...almost like the expected it to happen or weren't surprised that it did.

And, a very lengthy report of the actions.  And, if I knew about the video, I would insist on a copy.  Then, file charges if for nothing more than to scare the hell out of these idiots of potential jail and lawsuit.  Any medical cost will be handed to the coach and parents of these 2 morons.

 

Also, I would not umpire softball.  Too many things like this seem to happen when you mix guys into a girl's sport whether they are coaching or playing it.

In listening to the audio closely, it's obvious that the crowd felt like the PU was sticking it to them pretty good.

 

"Don't be afraid to call a strike"

"You proved your point"

"Enough already"

"You can't do that"

 

Either the fans were really on him, or he was getting some reactions from the players and/or coaches of that team.  Of course, none of this justifies throwing at him, but just adds to the story.

 

Just goes to show that we always need to be above reproach.  Don't use the FU strike/ball to get your point across.  Warn/eject when necessary for arguing balls and strikes, but always call 'em as you see 'em.  Follow that approach, and you lessen your chances of ending up on youtube for the wrong reasons.

Using a FU call to make a point damages the most important quality of an official - their integrity.  Like grayhawk said, if they are giving you grief, have a conversation, warn, then dump.  Do not sacrifice your reputation to stick it to one jerk.

 

This official just marked HIMSELF as one that cannot be trusted to be fair or impartial.  He may have a had stellar record up until this point, but now a seed of doubt has been planted.

We are assuming that is what he is doing.  That pitch may have been well out of his zone.  F2 does have to bring the glove back in and up after catching the ball.  When F2 frames a pitch, they are telling you they thought the pitch was a ball too.

The video of the full game is on youtube...I wouldn't watch the whole thing, but the HPU is clearly taking considerable heat from the parents in previous innings.....

After watching some of the pitches, those idiots have no clue where a strike zone is.  Most of the pitches they complained about were no where near a strike zone.  Most weren't in the same zip code of a strike zone.  Calling more strikes than she is throwing is not helping anyone.  She needs to get better at pitching and the coach needs to learn the actual strike zone not where he wants it to be. 

 

I see so many where F2 is scraping the ground with her glove and bringing it back up to the knees but they complain.  Just a terrible set of parents, players, and coach (unless all of them were part of it as well).

This is becoming an extremely disturbing trend at the youth level.  Daddy coaches feel they can retaliate against inexperienced umpires and get away with it.  The more YouTube videos that get posted showing teams doing it and little if any penalties being applied to the teams, it's only going to get worse.

 

Note: These are my opinions of how I would personally handle it if I were a youth level umpire working for a league.  I am not a lawyer nor do I have any legal background.  So, take my advice with a grain of salt.  Consult your personal atty or whatever.  But I would seriously suggest dealing with these bastards in the following manner...

If I was 200% sure it was on purpose, I would be leaving the game immediately due to injury and go to the hospital.  Depending on where I was hit - vital organs or head area in particular - I'm going there by way of ambulance.

 

I don't care if they finish the game or not, but if they decide to do so, they're doing it without me.  The team, coach, and/or league will be picking up my bills.  I would contact the local law enforcement.  I do have law enforcement experience.  In some jurisdictions you will have to file a complaint for assault and pay a processing fee.  In other areas, assault on a sports official is a crime that does not require one party to file a complaint against the other party.  Either way, I want the coach arrested.

 

I'd also contact NASO.

Looks like an untrained umpire, not that that would justify what happened. Just in the first inning every pitch was followed by the head. Indicator was in his right hand. No SH*# fair ball was pointed fair.
