Look at him moving out from behind the plate!

As far as the actual umpiring is concerned, would you send Teheran to the showers early? It was definitely in response to Harper staring the ball down, taking his sweet time with his first couple steps then flipping the bat. As the announcers noted, MLB pitchers don't miss their location with a fastball that badly.

Baseball is so stupid sometimes.

"How dare you look at your accomplishment! Now I have to hit you and potentially injure you with a 94mph fastball!"

"How dare you hit me with a 94mph fastball! Now I have to act like I'm hot s*** and cause a ten minute delay as both teams meet on the field to tell each other that we don't like each other!"

I think he should have been dumped. Is West old school "let 'em play"?

Harper is an a$$ .... and he needs to know better than to stare a home run down .....

Proof he doesn't get the pros, and he's still a bonified hot head

I thought it was a great job by the crew, shutting things down before they got started.

Probable conversation in one of the bullpens:

"Hey, where're we goin' for dinner after the game?"

"How, about,..oh, $hit, something's going on."

"Did he get hit?  What happened?"

"Beats me,"

...after a few minutes standing around in the infield...

"Ok, looks like we can go back."

"Yeah, let's go.  Now, about that dinner..."

I'd say he hit his location just fine.

I do think it was intentional, but I agree West is from the old school where sometimes the game regulates itself.

I highly doubt you would have seen that from one of the newer guys.

But I also think the players know the umpires well enough to know when they can get more rope in certain situations.

I understand that this whole thing is part of the "code" and understand why it happens, but I think it is silly nonetheless.  What is really accomplished by all of this chest beating and bravado?  Basketball and football players celebrate good plays all the time, but it's really looked down upon in baseball.  I don't even think Harper's reaction to the home run was all that bad either.

The umpiring crew did handle this really well.  Joe West is the guy you want to be on the field with if the proverbial sh*t hits the fan.

In football, there is a "philosophy" when someone scores a TD..."act like you've been there before."  The truly great ones always do.  Harper has great potential, but he has to learn how to act "great."

I agree with everything else Zach said.

Football players look like asses when some of their celebrations. This why they passed rules to stop it. They need to apply to defensive players too. Teams down by 42 and they tackle a guy behind the line and they act like they saved mankind.

My point was that the other team doesn't retaliate in football for celebrations.

Joe's conversation with the pitcher when giving him a new ball, "I know that was intentional. You know that was intentional.  Everyone knows that was intentional.  You made your point, but don't let it happen again."

LOL, you've obviously never seen a football game before, at any level.

Seriously.

No, the great ones always have acted like the great ones they are, unfortunately there aren't many great ones around anymore. Or ones with class.
