Cabrera and Leyland are both upset that Leyland was not inducted into the HOF this year and both take it out on Fairchild blaming him for the slight and HOF vote.

And where is that post game with Leyland expounding with his (take it to the bank) "lead in statement" that he is the greatest supporter of umpires in the whole wide world along with his further criticism of the umpire involved.

I disagree with the announcers. Staying in the game in a big situation is Cabrera's job. Fairchild's job is to be objective.

Whatever he said must have been a doozy since he wasn't animated and was doing nothing to show Fairchild up. Without knowing what was said, it is impossible to know if an EJ was the right call, but you have to assume it was a personal invective to go that fast.

But it's still perception. and when the average fan sees Miggy get thrown out for muttering some words without any animation, no face to face argument, it looks like the umpire is on a power trip. I know I'm the big minority on this one, but I think something like "another word and your gone" may have been appropriate there.

Seriously, how can anyone have an opinion on this EJ without having any idea what was said? Is it okay to tell the umpire he f'ing sucks as long as it's not demonstrative? I'd be happy to have an opinion on this one if I knew what Cabrera said. Absent that, I'll give Fairchild the benefit of the doubt.

Miguel said he said "That's horrible" and Fairchild tossed him... I'm guessing he said (or Fairchild heard) "You're horrible" and made the toss.

 

While I know it's an automatic, I think in this situation, Fairchild could have taken his mask off and given him a big "Excuse me?" before tossing him... It shows everyone that there is a problem here, and more than likely diffuses any problems for the rest of the game... And if it doesn't? Heck, they've been warned! Good bye.

 

In the majors, I'd say make it clear there is a problem before making an ejection. YMMV

Fairchild said he warned him ....after his mumblings after pitch 1.

 

I too am not sure what he's complaining about ....both pitches looked OK to me, ...Fairchild was there all day long calling that pitch.  Now, F2 moved a lot on pitch 1 which doesn't help how it looked but still.

 

I'm sure that Miggy said "You're F'ing Horrible" .....after pitch 2 ....which, demonstratively done or not, is an EJ .....

 

However, ...because of how calm Miggy appeared, it looked bad to everyone else who doesn't understand umpire-player relations ;)

 

And by the way @dumbdumb .....  As MJR said, ...  Leyland never addressed the issue, he said "next question" when asked about the ordeal

If you were going to warn him off to help him save himself ... and I'm not saying Fairchild should have in this case ... you wouldn't want to pull the mask off. That would have come off as deliberately confrontational and contrary to the notion of deescalation. And then it probably leads to an EJ anyway.

And straight up ejecting Cabrera doesn't come of as confrontational and deescalation? I'm not saying to whip it off and get into Cabrera's face. I'm saying take off the mask, look at Cabrera, and tell him "Excuse me?" ... Everyone in the stadium now knows there is a problem here...

The relevent comparison is between a demonstrative warning and understated one, not between a demonstrative warning and an ejection.
