I attended The Umpire School last year and unfortunately wasn't chosen. However I'm still chasing my dream and I'm attending a college camp in a couple of weeks to try and earn a job. Any of you guys have the experience of both and want to share some mechanic differences/rule differences with me? Note: TUS was 2-man mechanics and this particular college camp is going to be using 3-man mechanics. Example question I have is: What are the pre-pitch hand signals used by umpires in college? (TUS taught us that they aren't used because everyone uses a uniform two man system and should know where they are supposed to be.) Also, as far as calling strikes, have any college umpires been taught to keep their head forward when signaling a strike out to the side? Any other info anyone wants to share is valuable as well. Thanks.

I don't umpire anything but t-ball games but my advice to you is to just go out there and apply wan you have learned at TUS. You will be fine. And yes keep your head forward no matter how you call a strike. Just quit pointing to the side!

But Rolando, you have done some pretty high level T-ball, don't sell yourself short.

Get a CCA mechanics book, there is everything you need there.

Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2

Also, keep your mouth shut and your ears open. They will teach you just about everything you are asking about. I think anytime you call a strike to the side you should keep your head facing towards the infield. That way you can keep your eyes on any potential sh**houses. That should be on any level. Good luck. Just curious, which clinic?

HAHA I learned that this weekend. That's my next umpiring investment. The camp ended today. It went well and I'll be uploading a little plate work video later for criticism. I love getting it.

Thanks. It was a three-man clinic given to local Louisiana HS guys by a few college umpires and assignors.

Point to the side.. College assigners don't care about that as long as you have good timing.

Pointing to the side for strike calls and missing "something" is more of a product of good timing than anything else. See the pitch into the catcher's mitt, and call it. You're head position is immaterial.
