This is a no brainer.  My assumption is that Gomes did not verbally ask for time prior to raising his hand because his argument was that he had his hand raised (and demonstrating this was what got him tossed).

No way......he was way too late.  This is one of my biggest "pet peeves" as an umpire albeit you don't see it much in the pros.  Batters think "the hand" stops the game automatically, but it doesn't.

I'll tell players at any level .........

" batter, I've got to have a verbal also, don't be bashful, yell it,.... the hand and the verbal works best, but it doens't mean you'll get it, it depends on where the pitcher is" ...

I always get a .... "oh ...ok, thanks blue"

I pretty much do the same thing.

Players "Request" time.

Umpires "grant" time.

This moron was trying to juke the pitcher.

I only grant time before the pitcher starts his pitch.

Once he starts we are playing ball.

Pitchers can hurt themselves aborting a pitch.

MickeyMouse crap doing this while your are in the box!

Still do not understand why umpires still face and listen to an ejected player or coach.

I start walking away even if it is in a small circle.

If I am the PU I dust off the plate and state "I am not talking with you, you are not a part of this game anymore"

Facing an upset person will only continue to provoke them.

It is my partners job to rodeo them off of the field.

4 foot rule comes in effect at the ejection.

What a maroon.  How did he expect to get time there?

He did not want time, he wanted to mess with the pitcher.
