The announcers saw him shake his head no and assumed he was saying there was no interference when actually Melvin was asking if it the runner was supposed to go back to third. Just because the umpires didn't do what the announcers thought should happen they are wrong. What would be nice if they come back and say, "Hey we screwed up last night and actually don't know $hit from shinolla. The umpires were completely correct." Yeah, that will never happen.

I was most impressed by analyst Jim Fox earlier this season who on Tuesday said the officials had made an incorrect call (and those were his words during that first telecast ("...on what looks like an incorrect call...") and when he came on the air for Wednesday's game, started with something like, "But before we begin, I want to apologize for mischaracterizing a call. I was a little harsh on the referees and I shouldn't have been because we went back to the tape and it showed they made the right call and I made the wrong one. Now on to tonight's game..."

Unfortunately, Jim Fox is the LA Kings' hockey analyst and not a baseball guy. But always helps to start somewhere. Jim Fox is actually accused by some fans of defending officials too much - during a chat with fans, one fan claimed that one referee has a vendetta against LA. Fox shut it down with "First of all...the two situations you have talked about dealt with two different referees." before continuing onto basically poo-pooing the idea of pulling assignments based on fan-perceived biases or calls made in previous games.
