If they are offered a clean, safe, reasonably located locker room and still dress in the street then the umpires are at fault. If not, the league is. 

 

It mentions the umpires have access to the football stadium locker room, but it doesn't mention where it is in relation to the field.

And sometimes, while the umpires have access to a room, it is very hush-hush and no one would know unless they have been around for awhile or they ask for it (and sometimes it is just easier to do it at the car than to try to chase someone down to ask if there is a room available).

This is something we warn our associaton members about every year......none of our schools or leagues offer a locker room for baseball umpires.....we tell them where to park if possible and to be discreet, as some of the field are in neighborhoods and at middle shcools....

I'm surprised no one has commented on how the article refers to umpire uniforms as "costumes"........but I digress.  Some of the bigger schools in my area will offer a locker room or at least a bathroom to change, but at the smaller schools you are on your own.

i dont understand why you cant change your pants at home or at work or wherever you are coming from...do you get dressed for your day job in the parking lot before you walk in?

Nah, I just don't need it, it's prob not that big of a deal. Plus I think I'll take my chances with the parking lot vs. some of these bathrooms. Yuck.

That's why I wear a Superman T-Shirt under my uniform and I put a Batman sticker over the W on my Gold!!

Nearly impossible to find a discreet area around this HS unless things have changed since I was last there.  That said some umpires get too naked in too much public for too long.

The article is so completely inadequate I don't know where to begin. What time/days are the umpires changing on the street? Is the locker room available only for school games? If you look at the map Ontario Street is on the other side of the high school - it's got to be 200 yards away, across 2 streets - so the umpires would rather walk farther? Where is the parking for this incredibly convenient locker room?

This thing reads like something from a snarky Middle School newspaper.

Edited to add: I missed that Ontario Street ends and begins on the other side of the school. What kind of lunatic designs streets in Oak Park?

The locker room is under the stands on the south side of the field.  Parking on lake street is not easy and I don't recall an entrance to the football field there.  And the locker room wasn't an option (or at least not a known option) when I was there.

The locker room is under the stands on the south side of the field.  Parking on lake street is not easy and I don't recall an entrance to the football field there.  And the locker room wasn't an option (or at least not a known option) when I was there.

 

 

Seems like there is a parking garage to the east of the stands on the south side, so I would think umpires could park there, change in the locker room and then head over to the field across the football field.  Of course, this is only convenient if they can securely store their gear bag in the locker room and then change back after the game.  Otherwise, they end up bringing stuff into the locker room, changing, putting their stuff back in the car and then heading to the field and reversing the process after the game is over.

 

I have a feeling that the neighbors are more pissed that people park on their street at all than the fact that umpires change at their cars.  Too bad folks - that was your mistake buying a house right next to a school.  Location, location, location!

I cant remember whether theres an open gate between the parking garage and the football stands but I agree that this is where I would first look -- but students park there and if they aren't gone by the time the umpires arrive even parking in the garage could be an issue.

 

And I do commend the school for making this available and making it known to the umpires in an attempt to address the situation.
