When having a sub varsity type game and /or middle school game do you widen the strike zone, I myself will  bring the zone up a little and go a little further outside to get the players to swing and put the ball in play. Or do you just call the zone and have a walkarama. Your thoughts.

Depends. If they come out swinging, I'll call it stricter. If they come out watching, I'll call it to get them swinging. Don't take that to mean I change my zone. I'll just call the borderline pitches more one way or another depending on how the game's going.

Make them swing.  Im not there to watch batters stand with a bat on thier shoulder.  Always widen it just a little more and make it just a little higher.  I get paid by the game not the hour.

Yes we do get paid by the game.

But good game management gets the game over quicker which means you earn more per hour.   lol :meditation:

You should widen it for the sub varsity / middle school games.  Then, you should make your varsity zone match that.

Yes that is true but there are some games no matter how good the game management is never ends fast.  Had a DH that lasted 7 hours.  Both games went 7 innings with a 15 minute break between the two games.  First game was 18-14 and second game was 11 - 9 maybe but no matter how big the zone and how fast we tried to move it along that was one long Saturday

Strikes lead to outs.

Outs lead to Innings.

Innings lead to Games.

Games lead to Paycheques.

Paycheques lead to Beer.

Beer leads to Sleep.

Sleep is Good.

Call more strikes.

The entire purpose of sub-varsity ball is to get kids some experience, fielding, hitting, etc.  How on earth is anyone benefited by every batter in the game just standing there because the pitcher can't throw a strike?  Nothing good at all can possibly come from that.  There is no point in calling a book zone in a game like that, and there is not one single person in the entire ballpark that will be impressed by you calling the MLB zone in a freshman game.  Not one.

I had a Middle School Varsity Manager tell me he appreciated my zone because he wants his kids swinging the bat.....

One of my supervisors said, " Strikes and outs will get you home."
