It really saddens me that UA will no longer have their poly wools. I picked up a pair of each last spring and love them. Now I need a couple more so. I have a chance to get the PWs cleaned. I just received a pair of the Smitty PWs from Purchase Officials. First off, they didn't come in the wrapper that Smitty products typically come in. That leads me to believe that I have been sent a returned item. The were just stuffed in a Priority Mail box. They look awfully. Pill ed up and everything. A no brainer return. I decided to check the Honigs PWs, and noticed "New 2013" Ultimate Pants. Do any of you have info on what's so new about them? Thanks Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

No experience w/ the new Ultimates from Honig's but for secondary pants, I just do the Smitty Charcoal polyester.  They hold up well, and look great for $40! ($45 for plate)

I highly suggest purchasing the polywools, I have 2 pairs of honig's polywools and am going to pick up another pair this week. I have their ultimates from 2 years ago and quite frankly they suck. BTW, I have a 'user' pair that I do not dryclean and they are holding up very well but nothing can beat the crispness of a freshly dry cleaned pair of polywool pants.

Spend the extra $$$$ and look the best.

Next time you need a new pair of pants...buy poly-wools. Take good care of them and they should last you 10+ years. Each time you need to purchase a new pair of pants....buy more poly-wools.....then before you know it..... your back up pants will be poly-wools. Then every time you step on the field you will look like a Pro.

You must have stock in Honigs...  :notworthy:

Concur on the Honig's Ultimate.  They look terrible.  Terrible pattern, terrible color, terrible fit.  The guys I work with who wear them - you can tell from 90 feet away that they are wearing Honig's Ultimates.   Maybe the new ones are better, but I would not risk it.

I posted earlier about my disappointment in the Smitty PWs.   They were the exact same quality/cut/look at the regular Smitty's.  Not bad, but certainly not close to the Honig's PWs.

I have 2 pairs of Honigs poly-wools - 1 pair that I wore in about 50 games last year and a brand new pair.  I bring them both with me to my games (never know when a zipper might break) and I have trouble telling the difference between the two.

I have the U-A polywools and have noticed a bit of pilling on the plate pants, but for the most part they still look good.  Before that I had Smitty charcoals and they are still in the rotation, but all new pants will be polywools from either U-A (when they have them again) or Honig's.

I have the UA as well and I have noticed a little bit of pilling around the top part of the pants as well. This is my first experience with PWs....any ideas what might cause this?

I dry clean mine.

For what its worth, I do not dry clean regularly.  I machine wash (gentle) and drip dry.

I mainly dry clean mine...I think I washed mine once...gentle hang dry.

I've noticed the same problem with my PWs from U-A.

I have four pair of Honig's PW pants (two plate, two base)...2 sets are 4+ years old, other 2 are almost 2 years old.  I wash them during the season (gentle cycle w/ Woolite, drip dry) and dry clean them at the end of the season.  Still look like new and no pilling whatsoever.

I bought two pair from U-A this year (plate/base)...halfway into the season both have pilling, particularly in the front, and they are worn the same/get the exact same TLC as the Honigs variety.   I was wondering about this and now see it is not an isolated issue.  They are great pants, but I was always under the impression they were of the same material/manufacturer as the Honigs PW.

Shame too as I will avoid Honigs if at all humanly possible and would prefer to deal with U-A. Curious if Jim is aware of this and what may be causing it.

What exactly is pilling?

Where little rough balls form on top of the fabric. Mainly seen on sweaters.

Interesting that this is not isolated, I guess the batch of fabric Hardwicks used for the UA run might have been a little different. I have no experience with Honigs Polywools.

I dry clean my PolyWools at the beginning of the season, and before the tournament season cranks up in early June.  In between it's as previously posted; gentle, woolite, light cycle dryer for 10 minutes only, hang dry, no issues.

I have not seen the pilling issue, but Trakes2 has experienced it ...........

FWIW, pilling is not that unusual with wool garments. A fabric shaver will take care of it with little fuss.

That was my plan before my next game on friday. the pilling is not bad...just there.

A few years back, I took a bit of "safety logic" and applied it to my pants.  Some say that when buying a mask or CP, to spend the extra money for the safety.  Well, I did a little research and found that the MiLB guys around here wear Fecheimer pants.  Now I figure, if these pants can take the gruling usage/schedule of the MiLB umpires, they have to be good.  They cost a little more (around $45), but they've lasted a full 4 seasons HS & LL (including 2 LL regionals and a AAABA national tournament) and STILL going strong.  I only bought two more this year (just in case) because of a post season assignement that I received (apparently, they give you a pair of pants when you get there).
