i was just browsing purchaseofficials.com and saw that smitty is now making poly wool pants, i'm interested to know if anyone has tried these pants, i've been considering buying a set to use to work high school games and other lower level games so i can keep my honigs poly wools in better shape for my higher level games. Any input is appreciated

I've seen these pants in person. I'll say they are a step above Gerry Davis pants but are not even in the same zip code as Honigs or UA poly wools. The Honigs and UA poly wools are like tanks. There is really no need to baby them to keep them looking great. I've got about 8 pair that I rotate during a season. The oldest pair has about 5 seasons and probably over 500 games in them. If I lined up all of my pants and asked you to pick them out you would have a hard time doing so. During the season I dry clean them once in the spring before college ball starts and once in the summer. In between they see the washer machine once or twice a week. They snap back every time and look great after a quick iron to sharpen the creases.

So instead of buying lesser pants to work other games, just save some more money and buy some more Honigs or UA poly wools. Trust me you won't regret that you did.

I thought of picking up a set of the Smitty PWs as a "beater" pair, but in the long run, how much are you really saving? With a standard 10% discount that would bring a set to about $90 before shipping.

During Honig's black Friday sale, you could have picked up a set of PWs for $105ish before shipping I think. Youre talking about $7-10 per pair. Doesnt make much sense to me, either.

Even at the current prices of $66.95 and $69.95, you can still get a sizeable discount if you stacked discounts. That why I try to wait for sales and place one large order once a year and knock everything out at once.

Thanks for the input. I will be buying another pair of honigs polls then in the near future. I have 2 sets right now and am just looking to build those up so I can rotate them around a bit more. Definitely need to have the permanent crease redone in the older set though...

I use some standard Smitty Charcoal pants for when I am not working the higher level games. I think they are great and give the look. 99% of coaches and parents will never notice the difference. Only other umpires will really notice. I do have a permanent crease sewn into my regular pants and not my Ump-Attire poly-wools some people have told me they like the the standard pants with the permanent crease better.

I bought a couple pair of poly wolds from officials choice a couple years ago when I was still learning what to wear. They are my beater pairs of base and plate pants, but I never wear them, just the Honings i have purchased since. The officials choice pants are so far removed in color than any other pair of pants you really don't come close to matching anyone.

Fittske, do you just toss them in a regular wash? Anything special you do to them when washing, I'm trying to cut down on dry cleaning.

Gonna try the wash method on my UA Polys this year. Last year I dried cleaned them after every 2 or 3 games during the spring. Once summer came I was sweating so much I had to clean them after each game.

I have just about worn out my GD plate pants that I use as beaters. They have 4 seasons under their belt and tons of games...I also have some smitty pants, but all were hemmed incorrectly....short...and had to be lengthened...leaving no extra fabric (Weight) to help them hang right. Trying to lose a little weight. After that I plan to buy another set of Polywools (and maybe have my current ones taken in a bit) plus some GD or smitty to wear on sloppy days.

The problem I have with the constant dry cleaning is two-fold: One, I've been taught you only get suits dry cleaned when they're dirty, as dry cleaning will ruin the suit over time. I assume the same for my umpire pants. Two, the turn-around time for dry cleaning is usually at least two days -- what do I wear in the mean time?

I'm still debating buying some for this year, but I'm torn. It's a huge investment to me, especially for the amount of times I'll have a chance to wear them.
