This afternoon my partner and I had a perfect example of why the ball should be put back in play after each timeout or dead ball situation. R1, 2 outs. I'm in "B". The batter fouls off a pitch. After my partner put the ball back in play, R1 was in HUPHA mode (Head up his ass) and F1 picked him off to end the inning. The coach on his way back to the dugout, asked my partner if he had put the ball back in play, which he had. By doing that little simple mechanic, we ended up looking good. That is probably my biggest pet peeve about partners. Put the ball in play!

Agreed, put the ball in play verbally. I have thrown my partner under the bus by asking on a pick," Did you put the ball in play?" All my guys know they are to do this but some still fail to do it, so I make it a point.

all it takes is being caught flat footed one time.........and you will be a convert to the verbal and signal on every time.........

Had it happen twice with a pitcher today trying to do a pickoff to first after a foul. I give the count, he steps, throws, nothing, ball gets thrown back to the pitcher who steps on the mound and in a very loud voice say "PLAY". funny he didn't get it after the first time

I worked occasionally w/a partner who was weak on this. It's something I had brought up to him a number of times and initially his argument was that, if you (that is, I) see F1, F2, batter & PU ready, that I should just assume the ball's back in play. I tried to explain to him that I didn't think that was sufficient, but he didn't think it was important enough to discuss.

So, early last year after a pitch had been fouled off w/R1 @ 1B, the F1, F2 & PU were ready and the batter was stepping in when R1 took off for 2B. I said, "Time is out." a couple of times, but F1 spins and throws to 2B anyway and F4 tags the runner well before he reached 2B. So, I just kind of non-chalantly looked at the runner and gestured him back to 1B. It took him a moment, but he started going back.

Sure enough, the DM comes out, wanting to know why he didn't get the Out. He initially went to my partner who told him he didn't know why I was sending the runner back!!! I stepped in as soon as I saw where he was going (but not quickly enough to stop my partner from answering him), wrangled him away from my partner and explained the ball had not been put back in play yet. So, he asks the PU if he had put the ball back in play (which, of course, no-one has heard him do since before the 1st pitch) and my partner says, "No, I didn't." but he's glaring at me. For the rest of the game, my partner quite loudly and pointedly put the ball back in 'Play' each time it was necessary, but I could tell he was upset with me.

Once the game ended and we discussed it, he had calmed down and finally admitted to me that he understands and agrees with me, but wasn't happy with me showing him up on the field. I told him I don't believe I did that and our discussion ended amicably. We have worked together a number of times since then with no issues and while he's not perfect at putting the ball back in play (neither am I!) he's much, much better.

Moral of the Story: Put the ball back in 'Play!'

I worked with probably the best partner I've ever had Sunday. Our 1st time as a crew. R1, foul. F1 w/o stepping on the rubber, quickly spins and catches R1 off the bag talking to 1bc. F3 applies the tag. I just stood there.

DHC - "You gonna make a call?"

Me - "Not until the ball's back in play."

I looked at HP who was grinning at me giving me a thumbs up

;) I hope I get to work with him again. He's a good dude to hang out with and extremely knowledgable for a younger guy. We had a good day, ZERO issues, started AND FINISHED ahead of time. 7 complete in under 2 hours in the championship game. Talk about game mgmt!

A good dude ? Man, I'll tell you, he's the best. He's like a son to me, no lie. He thought a lot of you as an umpire, too. Said he'd work any game with you, without hesitation. That alone speaks volumes to your abilities, Fish. He is very selective about with whom he is comfortable working. And of course he's knowledgeable.....duh.

So tell me this, when I first started umpiring I had the hardest time putting the ball in play. So I just started doing it on every foul ball, ortime that is called. Whether there are runners on base or not. Not one of my senior umpires has a a problem with it but some of my peers have said I shouldn't do it. What do you guys think?

Tell your peers that you are absolutely correct. Tell them to simply read the book, the is made live when the umpire announces play. With no runners it is fine to just point, this still puts it in play, however, by doing it verbally every time you won't screw up.

You could comprimise by making it loud when there are runners on so your partner and the runners can hear you but just announcing it to the batter and catcher when there are no runners. Along with the point in both cases of course. You could even use different language like "play" with runners and "here we go" with no runners or something else, for example.

Do a verbal and point every time. Will keep you out of trouble. In youth games, coaches will whine if they think they got a quick pick off, but they learn quickly that the ball is dead until you say so. Also, if you do it consistently, it quashes any arguments. Had it happen in a HS varsity game this spring, PU hadn't put ball in play, stupid runner was already taking lead with pitcher off rubber, throws over, instantly both of us say "ball not in play yet," hear nothing from the coaches, only question was from the pitcher asking if he would of been out if it was a live ball.

It may be pointless for a game or 30 but you'll look great the one time you need to do it. Or very foolish the time you don't.
