Wow. I think he was right the 1st time. And I don't blame Renyolds or Showalter at all, actually. ESPN went over and over how it was the right call the first time, and then they made it the wrong call.

Oh, and HORRIBLE HORRIBLE announcing. Probably the worst I have ever heard. He was right the first time (they don't agree). EVERY time you throw your glove or bat in disgust you get eject. (They again don't agree). What pictures speak for themselves?? And what in the hell would you protest?! (Can you even protest if you've been ejected?)

What the hell is an equipment violation? "You throw your helmet you get fined, not ejected!" What league are they looking at?!?! Dumbass announcers... Look up Greinke's ejection, or any player who threw their helmet... It is an auto...

The play itself could have gone either way.

Great job by U2 in recognizing that neither U1 or PU saw the throw and that it was neccessary for him to make the toss.

And I am highly doubtful the announcer even knows what a protest is, I think he just likes the word.

i am usually looking at replays on mlb, well highlights, and ive seen majority where they reverse the call and it actually be right. this is the first time that i can remember seeing it overturn and be wrong?

1) throwing glove down is the same as throwing the ball down, throwing a helmet down, throwing a bat down, throwing a hat down. Ejection Deserved.

2) in real time, i can see where he could say he pulled his foot. slow motion, yes hit foot is still on.

3) he asked for help and thats what the umpire saw and thats the result. It's Judgement.

Throwing equipment at the professional level can be considered an equipment violation at the discretion of the umpires. They can either call it a violation (point at it and acknowledge it, write it up and MLB will assess a fine). Or they can choose to eject.

Usually if they just throw equipment in disgust it's a fine. If some verbiage is included it will result in an ejection.

During the Dodgers fiasco the other night Angel Campos issued an equipment violation and the announcers made note of it at the time.

Per the MLBUM, any player throwing equipment in protest of an umpire's call shall be fined and, if flagrant, ejected.

Typically the situation you see the fine to ejection escalation is a strike out that ends the inning, the batter turns around and is exchanging pleaseantries with the plate umpire, and in the process flips his bat over to the dugout, resulting in a fine. If the helmet goes too while he's still arguing, then it becomes flagrant and he gets run.

The problem is having the fine option available, everyone assumes there's an automatic progression. I say just get rid of it.

Here's an idea: let's act like grown-ups and not throw things because someone made us angwy.

Probably THE worst announcing I've ever heard. They said the initial call was wrong, they said that equipment throwing isn't ejectable, they said umpires never go for help on pulled foots, they said judgement calls are protestable. What a joke.

I posted it on the UEFL, but that was one hack announcing job. Holy hell that was terrible. They literally were pulling stuff out of their asses, throwing it against the wall, and hoping it stuck. God awful.

And there is that 2 faced Leyland again. He was ejected for just the same thing when it went against him, and said the umpire should just stick to their calls on plays like this. What a 2 faced douchebag. And of course he always goes into his "I support umpires more than anybody" whenever anything involving umpires and him comes up.

Here is the quote after an ejection on a help call with the catcher catching the 3rd strike (note:the call was missed) in case you disbelieve he thinks he is the greatest supporter whenever he argues.

"I'm not going to sit here and rip umpires," Leyland said, alternating between enraged and merely agitated. "I'm the most protective person in the world of umpires. I protect them more than anybody in the game."

Here is a help call that went against Leyland.

and how he says to just live and die with it. So why was he out there in the Oriole game? yep-2 faced. http://sports.espn.g...tory?id=6713640

Damned if we do and damned if we don't!

I think that play was to close to over turn, but hindsite is always 20-20. Reynolds not only threw his glove in obvious disgust but mouthed an expletive starting with the letter F pretty loud.

Watch the video, it was the combination of the two.

The announcers are no help at all. The league should be able to fine the crap out of idiotic statements by announcers that offer no basic serious undertanding of the rules.

But they make good money and their parents are proud of them. Nice to get paid for being homers and blasting on umpires and never disparriging, blasting and ripping players into oblivion.

And who is Mark Reynolds as a fielder anyway. This is the guy who was dead last as a 3rd baseman in baseball last year (over 100 games) with a fielding percentage below 900 at .897 (worse than pitiful) for over 100 games played. He committed 26 errors and that isn't even his high which was 34 errors in 2008 and a fielding pct of an amazing .904, again an embarrassment.

What would this guy know about fielding. He was so HS that they moved him to 1st because of his bat. He is the reincarnation of Dave Kingman. Home run, double or strikeout and pathetic 236 lifetime average, but he doesn't know squat about fielding.

Ya know you hear this from these idiots all the time..."its a pennant race, you cant throw him out," "it's a crucial game, you cant throw him out," "he's the leader of the team, you cant throw him out."

My son, ump_24, hit the nail right on the head.

And here are the ones I see at the games I go to that umpires ask for help on all day long. Note 1st base umpire is not even close to being straight-lined. Nor is the 1B being pulled off the bag in any way by the throw. He is just trying to quickly catch and make a throw to another base and cheat by coming off early or with nobody on, doing the old Keith Hernandez come off early to get the call. Make the call and do not get help.

Nice way to put your buddy on the hot seat when continually asking for help on these and divert the argument from yourself on calls like this and get your partner in an argument with the Manager/coach while you get to just walk away.

Holy $h!t you guys ....

Does anyone want to discuss what happened here, ...and why ??? Instead it's nothing but complaining about the announcers and what the players did to get ejected.

Why did this happen? Let's be umpires and learn from this, right?

Ok. Here's my .02. Go with your original call. this was way too close to be overturned by the PU.

but ......regardless of the outcome ..... Kellog got it right.....

And this is the downside of the "get the call right" philosophy. More damage is done to the credibility of umpires on just one call like this than 20 close calls where the play stands without a huddle.

Don't worry though. IR is coming. Sooner than you think, too.

Kellogg must not have been all that confident in his original call. If he knew he got it right, surely he would have told Timmons that he was sticking with his call. I don't know how Timmons was so sure that F3 pulled his foot, because he didn't.

bam is right. This is the "get it right" stuff for you: A first baseman spiking his glove and two ejections. Stick with it and you might be running Leyland at most.
