There's two different masks in the picture. Are you all talking about the All-Star on the left?

Chris not only modified the throat guard in the Ti, but the ear guards too. They usually have a bar or two that connects the main frame to the ear guards.

I think it's too new for any reviews. I certainly like the price though! I've seen it for around $85. Have you seen it for cheaper?

Yep check out Google Shopping. Lester's Upstate Sports has it for $75 too. I doubt there is a difference between the catcher's mask and the umpire's mask other than the harness. The catcher's mask can be found in the $50s

That throat guard is not only ugly, but doesn't protect your throat any better than the $6 plastic Wilson one that I bought for my new Titanium last fall.

That's impressive testing, and I am sure that the magnesium wire holds up beautifully.

I just hope that my throat guard gets caught on my CP like it's supposed to, and never gets rammed against my throat like that. In an ideal blow, the mask gets blown off anyway, and nothing like that happens. I've gotten clacked pretty hard about once or twice a year, and I've taken two down-and-up fouls that actually got to my chin. So I wouldn't go out there without one, but I think the new one is ostentatious and the all-black plastic one is pretty stealth.

Sure is!!! :)

Remember, .... that "dummy" didn't have a CP on .....so ........it's going to 'swing' in the wind!

Mine bounces off that pillow built into the front of my Platinum. I knew there was a reason for that dopey thing.

I never thought about that being what that pad was for. Interesting, but is it even necessary?

I have no doubt the Ti would hold up under a high speed blast especially since the plastic ones do.

But I agree I would like to see a video with the dummy wearing a CP for a more realistic show of what it looks like when you get hit.

The best way this throat would work is if the mask you use does not have a built in throat. Those are almost impossible to find. What I would do is buy a Diamond mask or a Wilson Ti and chop off the throat, and power coat the mask and the all star throat black. That is a great DYI project. Too much work and $$$ for the average but a nice rig if done right......

BTW I powder coated my Wilson Ti and it tuned out great!

Why wouldn't it work as attached in the photos?

IMO, the built in throat guard doesn't really guard your throat. If you think it does, get someone to take a picture of you in your stance. Huge hole. This throat guard will help fill the hole.

Wow, when you see it on an actual mask, it looks pretty odd.

So THIS looks good but a Mizuno with spider guard is "inexplicably popular"?

C. Brown ...

Please re-read Kevin's post ........ :shakehead:

Hmmm...

I don't know what to say. I described it as ostentatious and odd, but that somehow means looks good.

Aside from my wife, of course, no one in my regular life mistakes what I say at nearly the same rate as some of you guys.

Got mine today. It might go back. I got it for my All Star FM25TI that I got new for $50 last month (that is a story for later). Two observations. 1. The silver of the throat guard is much shinier than that of the FM25TI which is the same color of the Wilson TI frames. 2. The way I had it attached I was getting a lot of clank noises. Looking back at the pictures that Jim posted I will try to attach it a little differently before I make my final decision.

It is crazy light. I can live with the color difference, but the clanking is a bit much. I will update when I get a chance.
