I have taken three serious toe shots in my Reeboks since July. The last one over Thanksgiving was brutal. My toes were burning for several minutes. My big toe got pretty red, and was sore for an extended period.

Then, as I was doing my annual gear inventory check and clean, I started gazing at my nearly new New Balance 450s that have served as my never-used back-ups to my wonderfully comfortable Reeboks. Well, after that series of toe shots that I think I felt way too much, I am thinking long and hard about going back to the NB 450s. I took several good toe shots in my original pair of 450s, and I never felt a thing. One of the shots was a straight shot from an uncaught 95 m.p.h. fastball in a fall intrasquad game from a future professional pitcher. I thought that was a worthy test, and the 450s passed it glowingly. The Reeboks are simply not as resilient on a high-velocity toe shot.

I still love them for their traction and comfort, but those old, trusty NB 450s are truly excellent in their own right. At $69, you will be even more satisfied if you go for a pair.

The old NB have an actual steel toe in them. I hope the new model keeps that.

One tip on injury prevention is to keep you big toe nail clipped. Trust me on this one, fellas, it makes a BIG difference.

The old 450 has a more rounded snout. The new ones, like the Reebok, have an extra ridge just behind the toebox, to catch balls. One would think that an angled surface, and not blunt one, would be better for deflecting the energy. That's why the old +POS was so great. Steel toe that smoothly transitioned to full foot coverage.

It's a little funny how these things go. When I slipped on a pair of Reebok plate shoes, I thought I would never go back to the NB 450s. I was so thrilled with the sheer comfort of the Reeboks that I even accepted their bizarre appearance and their being so difficult to care for. They were that comfortable.

But those toe shots made them rather uncomfortable. They can't be felt that much. They just can't.

I've heard several reports that you need to go 1/2 size up for the 450's ?? Yes? I'm 10.5 in my Reeboks, and my Nike base shoes ......

My work shoes, ... 10's, ....athletic ...10.5 .........would I need an 11 in the NB450?

2011 version of nb plate shoes fit accordingly...if u get the 2010 version u need to go up at least half size...im a 11E and in 2010 i tried a nb plate shoes and the 11EE was tight ..i needed a 11 and a half 4E...this past spring i tried an 11EE and fit perfect..the new 2012 version i hear fit almost like the 2011 version..personally i dont like the nb plate shoes..i find them a bit difficult to put on and take off..and after hearing stories about guys getting hit in the toe and feeling pain , i ll keep my ancient pos plate shoes that are 19 years old and still in great shape..i just wish they were lighter... i really liked that 3n1 plate shoe until i saw the pic of the toe smashed in

Thanks but please clarify. You've used 3 different years for different model 450's ...confusing. There should be just 2, ....the 450, and the new 460.

I did and I was definitely glad. I'm kind of a tweener on sizes like you - sometimes I'm 10, sometimes I'm 10.5. I went with 10.5 on the NB and I wonder if I could've even gone to 11. Anytime you've got a steel toe, you have to realize you're not getting any flexibility on the end, so when in doubt, go big.

Also for those interested the Smitty shirt is identical to the majestic made overseas shirt! I own both, and have worn the MLB made in usa shirts. Smitty did a really really nice job on this copy cat. The only thing is that they do run a bit bigger. So I'm a 36" waist and a 42 jacket. So I buy L, but in this shirt for the bases I have to wear M. Majestic is L all the way across the board. And I got everything in record time. "they beat Jim, and Honigs all where ordered on the same day, within an hour of eachother"....shhh

I hate to bring up a really old topic .....and probably discussed a lot, but I can't find the answer to my question.

It appears that Purchase officials still has the NB450 for $69 ....now, I know for sure I need an 11, but should I also go to the EE instead of the D ...aren't the 450s also known to be really narrow?
