  1. From the OP "my BU is somewhat straightlined and as the D is clearing the field the 3BC/manager askes if he can go for help." If you are going to ask for help then do it BUT not after the play is OVER and the defense is leaving the field. Why! If there were multiple runners how do you know the defense would not have made the play on a different runner. In other words, the teams (offense and defense) REACT to an umpires call (right or wrong). if you want help then by all means go for help BUT do it right away. In the OP if I was PU I would NOT have changed the call. After the game away from everyone I would simply tell my partner 'Bill next time you need help please do it right away". You are making a blanket statement Shame On you guys that only care about yourselves without re-examining this particular OP. The defense was for all practical purposes off the field and now the BU wants help. NO WAY This is similar to the following. 1-2 count on B1. B1 checks his swing and the ball gets past F2. The PU calls the pitch a ball and DOES NOT ask for help. The defense is pleading with him to ask for help etc. etc. After some 3-4 minutes the PU finally says alright I will check with my partner. You as BU were certain B1 offered at the pitch. What do you do? Answer: Nothing the pitch is a ball let's play. Why! If the PU had done his job and asked right away, B1 might have made it to first base (the ball got past F2) but because the pitch was called a ball B1 stayed in the box. If you as BU change the call to a strike (it's now strike 3) you just gave the defense a "cheap" out and in a way bailed them out. This particular OP IMO has nothing to do with your statement "Shame On you guys that only care about yourselves." We care about the GAME Pete Booth Hey guys, OP here. I understand what you're saying about asking for help too late in the stage of events. In my sitch it was the 3rd out with no other runners, the BU came to me as soon as 3BC asked him to get help, if it had been the 1st or 2nd out it would have been just fine (I think). The D cleared as soon as my partner made the call, it was probably all of 10-12 seconds between the call and walking down to talk with me, no, he didn't just point he came to have a private conversation. thanks for all the feedback and insite on this type of sitch. 1
  2. just thought that was an excellent line that needed rereading. 1
  3. Would LOVE to see his Carlucci stuff, huh ??? Hey Stan, does he swing by here?? I thought he was strictly ".org" ... I thought the same thing... I took a look at the members list here and didn't see him. I think like Richard S. he's only on that other site. 1
  4. the sitch: 3rd out is a banger at 3rd, my BU is somewhat straightlined and as the D is clearing the field the 3BC/manager askes if he can go for help... so here he comes right down to me as PU (I had great angle as he was the last runner and I had him safe by a mile). So i give him what I have and he makes the change... you can imagine what happens next. I know there are two schools of thought on going for help and I'm really not looking to battle on the "get it right no matter what" VS "live and die with your call" debate. My question is IF your partner comes for help (I almost wish he would have told the coach he didn't need help) and you know that change might start WWIII do you give him what you have or do you have nothing to offer? As always, thanks, 1
  5. Ok, I know, don't do solo games. So I took a big diamond solo game the other night. R2, 2 out and B4 hits to F8 (who muffs it) I come out to about the dirt on the plate side of the mound for the catch/no catch. Throw to F2 is near perfect and I have a banger at the plate. My question is where should I be for this call, I was stuck on the infield and just sort of mirrored what I would normally do for a call on the other side. I feel like I was in a good position with good angle, but surprisingly one bench was less than impressed with the call. I don't (or try not to) do many big diamond solo games so is there another mechanic/position I should have taken? Thanks, 1
  6. Before even clicking on this thread I thought what is Rich Ives doing ASKING a question, but now I see why. Well, my first instinct was when the previous batter becomes a runner or finishes his time at bat. But then I had some doubts. I haven't thumbed through my manuals yet but I'm going to go with when he positions himself in the batters box (assuming there isn't another batter already there). I will happily be corrected as now I'm a bit curious myself. 1
  7. taken care of. thanks S, thanks J.
  8. does someone know if I can get a FED book in pdf? Thanks, 1
  9. I use my words. much like when you balk an F1 and a coach wants an explanation, you don't "show" him you tell him in a few short words what you have. Same with your play, a hand print in the dirt means nothing, what about the other hand. A cleat mark in front of home plate means nothing, what if he stepped after hitting the ball. We don't accept coaches pointing or demonstrating thier idea of what happened and we shouldn't either (in most cases), clear, concise, short explanation of what you have should do in most cases. 1
  10. the PU has the only count that counts. that being said if something strange (2 runners steal home on a wild pitch followed by a conference followed by a 30 minute rain delay) had happened during that at bat that may have caused me to loose the count I could see consulting with the home book. but normally the PU count stands. 1
  11. Don, I would be interested to know where you believe the rules jurisdiction stops. Since I am a LL president and an adult, can I not throw with my sons in our yard? Is it location so that I cannot throw on a LL field during practice? Since Rule 3 is entitled "Game Preliminaries", I would argue that the rule is limited to games and pre-game. Rule 3.09 even starts with adults behavior during the game. I would be interested to know who decided that this rule applied to practices also. That message has not been given in my area and would be challenged if it was attempted. I'm the UIC for my local league and this interp was sent down by our district. I told them they were crazy if they thought they were going to walk onto my practice field and stop me from throwing a ball to a player. I can accept (barely) the restriction during a game or in the bullpen or even at the game site, but at practice you've got to be sh!ting me! so let's see, I can HIT baseballs at an unprotected shortstop but I can't throw a ball to a geared-up catcher for blocking practice? 1
  12. It's about keeping the kids doing something and learning at the same time. It wasn't all that long ago that kids had to do the base coaching also. Now you can put adults out with the coindition that here has to be one in the dugout. In the tournaemt when you have only two adult coaches it means having one kid coaching bases. And no, the kids are NOT too stupid to coach bases. That's just another adult superiority myth. In fact, with some daddy-coaches they kids know more about it than the adults. not an issue anymore, they removed the clause of only a manager and one coach if 12 or less on the roster, now you can roster 9+ and have a manager and 2 coaches. 1
  13. This is a LL only issue so if you do not do LL (and I COMPLETELY understand if you don't) than you may want to disregard this thread entirely. So LL 7.13, between the green book and the RIM (sorry I don't know how to paste from the RIM) it seems that a pitcher simply going to the mound with the ball cannot stop an advancing runner. The "play" I seem to see each spring, and again last night, is with R3,B2 takes ball 4 and sprints off towards 1B with full intention of rounding and going to 2B, of course F2 fire to F1 who runs to the mound to "stop" the BR. usually the BR and F1 reach their destinations about the same time, last night F1 wasvery fast and on the mound well before the BR rounded 1st but the BR continued on to 2nd. I let it go telling the DC that simply having the ball on the mound does not stop a runner when the play was not "relaxed". Anyway, does someone (like RIch Ives) know of an official interp for this common LL issue? Thanks, 1
  14. batter fouls one off to bring the count to 3 & 2, I point and say play just like always and the batter turns back and looks at me as if to say "hu?" I say "I said play" as the batter turns back to face the pitcher F1 is about to release the ball and the batter just stands there to get rung up. 3BC makes some comments about his batter not being ready as he heads to the dugout. I know I blew this one or I wouldn't have been thinking about it all night. It wasn't a quick-pitch just a fast working F1 and a slow thinking batter. looking back the best I think I could have done would be after F2 gloves the ball say no pitch and tell F1 to wait until the batter is ready. any suggestions. Thanks, 1
  15. here's one http://cgi.ebay.com/1928-Baseball-Leagues-Rule-Book-Umpire-Roy-Van-Graflan-/360289056729?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e2e6b7d9
  16. did we loose the formula for more trees?
  17. Too many parents trying too hard to coddle their youngens, wouldn't want poor little Johnny to get a scratched knee... I think I even saw one mom go out to breastfeed her 7 yo right there in the middle of a game! 1
  18. There was a kid on my youngest son's T-Ball team (a million years ago) that slid into every base, including Home, every time - Even if he was taking two, he'd slide into 1B, get up and then slide into 2B. good for him, let them be boys! If I slid everywhere I went at my age they'd lock me up, so you better do it while you can. 1
  19. and now to "no-slide"... when I first became UIC at my LL I was informed that in T-ball there was a NO-SLIDE rule. I asked if they had ever seen 5&6 yo at the park, they all have grass stained knees, these kids want nothing more than to slide. I have since removed the rule. 1
  20. I called a no hitter in an 8u game once... 37 walks 7 HBP does that count?
  21. first wrap the to be cut area in masking tape then I would use a fine tooth blade on a cut-off or chop saw. if you don't have one than even a table saw will work. last option go with a hacksaw. you can then round the edges with some sandpaper quite easily and it will look factory if done right. 1
  22. had this the other night (I was BU) B1 squared to bunt and was hit in the wrist with the pitch. He DID NOT offer so what is the proper verbal/physical mechanic for this type of play? IF he offers my mechanic would be "TIME", point and say "YES HE DID" (or WENT) and ring up the strike but what about when he did not swing/offer and is hit in the stike zone? I know I have "TIME" I know its a stike and he stays just not sure on the mechanic. I haven't ran across this one before. Thanks, 1
  23. what level of ball? big difference between teaching dads how to call 10U LL and having news guys stepping on a big diamond for the first time. 1
  24. Are you a dealer? nope, but I'm guessing that's what you were getting at. 1
  25. That's not the only reason, but I don't want to get into semantics. If you're cold, do as bikerider said and wear more layers. visible hands are honest hands.
