I picked this section but please move if needed. I work for the local HS association and we do almost no LL but we do get a few a year. Anyway, I've got an assignment to work a LL game (15U) in a couple of days and my question is: when you work (if you work) a LL game through your association do you go through all the LL only stuff like equipment checks, pitch count, catcher inning count or do you run it like any other HS game you might do. I'm not concerned with the rules differences but more the administrative stuff that goes along with LL. Thanks, 1

Isn't the LL catchers box the foul lines extended ( I don't do LL -- I only seem to remember this from the boards)? The catcher needs to be WAY out there to be out of that box. only in LL majors and below, at the 50/70 or JR and above the box is traditional.

Thank goodness the Olympics are back!!!!

Holy hell, can I quit baseball and officiate Russian curling? -
I have a hard time getting an out based on the OP. First the D is the one that errored with the passed ball (screw the team that screwed up). 6.06c mentions stepping out of the box or any other movement. We've got neither in the OP. Give me something else that the batter did and I'll take an out. Other wise I'd say good job batter. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise. 1

Video from Umpire Cam Behind the plate - AAA Game
1dumbquestion replied to sdix00's topic in Free For All
that puts you in a pretty narrow age window, Goldeneye on the 64, when the arm came out I was thinking a reload was coming on something like Battle Field Bad Company 2 or some other FPS. 1 -
This wasn't my 1st game nor my 1000th game, this was somewhere in the meaty middle. I had to this point an uneventful base game when it happened. It was quick and sudden and came without warning. There I was in C getting ready for what was supposed to be a routine 5-3 putout to end the inning. The BR was a tad faster then expected the F5 a bit slow on the transfer. I was about to have a banger, great, no problem... I've got this. You know those Snicker Bar commercials, "wanna get away for a while"? The ball hits the glove, the foot hits the bag, I've got myself an out. My timing is on, I waited just long enough to make sure I had a ball in the glove. The 1st base coach, on the other hand, was much faster in his call of safe. Sorry coach, this one is mine. I go to ring him up, right arm comes up, punches him out, hard enough to lift my left foot a bit. My mouth opens... SAFE!. WTH? Did I just hear what I think I heard? Sure enough I did, as well as everyone else. I quickly reaffirmed my out call physically and verbally twice and jogged out to shallow right to hide in the tall grass. I've moved on now as this was a couple of games ago but I do work with that partner again soon and I'm sure he'll remind me. Just thought I'd share, 1

i would agree but in my sitch R1 (not R2) got in the rundown because of the reversed/wrong call R2 simply trotted home when that happened.
-
sitch: R1, R2 1 out, B4 hits a ground ball to F6, F6 bobbles then tosses to F4 to start the DP, F4 drops the ball on the transfer. I'm PU and had come out to watch for FPSR. My partner calls the out of R1 then when he sees the ball on the ground reverses himself and calls safe. At this point R1 had started to trot off toward the 3rd base dugout but when F4 started after him he ran causing R2 to run from 3rd and ended up scoring with R1 being tagged out in a short rundown. So, OC is ok because he was going to get an out anyway and now he's got a run to go with it. DC is not pleased as my BU booted the call causing the run to score. My BU came to me with that look you don't want from a partner you've never worked with... the one that says he's scared and has no idea what to do next. He told me that F4 had dropped the ball when he tried to throw to F3 and he thought that R1 should be safe (he saw it on tv once). Anyway, I got both coaches together and told them we were placing the BR on 1st the R2 on 3rd and R1 was out at 2nd (thereby removing the run) DC was good with this but as you can imagine the OC was a tad upset. I (quickly) explained that FED allows for "fixing" the results of a blown call that puts a team at a disadvantage (no, I did not quote chapter & verse). The OC jawed a little for the rest of the half inning but nothing out of hand. So, thoughts and opinion on how badly we handled it? Thanks, 1

positioning for the 9-3 putout from "A"
1dumbquestion replied to 1dumbquestion's topic in Umpire Mechanics
Thanks for all the quick replys. At first I thought I was fine on this but now reading how you all see it I can chalk it up as a leason learned. On the hit I didn't think there was going to be an attempted 9-3 and it wasn't until I was heading in that F3 setup so at that point I was stuck getting ready for the play. I will take the advise of checking my outfield to see how they are playing and react to a hard hit ball faster and tighter on my pivot. I can see how the unorthodox positioning caused the coach to think he could question my call. Seldom posting, always reading, Thanks agian, 1 -
I'm in "A" B2 (1 out) hits sharply to F9, I begin to come in to pivot when I see F3 setting up for a throw so I come set in about the same place you'd set up for a typical 5-3 or 6-3 put-out. Ball beats the runner by a good half step and I ring him up. I jog back to A and notice the 3rd BC heading my way (he'd got time from PU and was walking calmly) He asked if I thought I had a good angle to get the call right, I was a little stunned and simply said "yes, I had great angle it wasn't even close" he then said "you're 100% not 99% sure right?" I said "the ball beat the runner, we're done here lets play". He smiled and said ok. My question isn't about my conversation with the coach (unless you have input) but more about how you would take a play like the 9-3. I know it's not a traditional put-out so I just got the angle I thought worked and where I could get set in-time to see it happen. Thanks for any input, 1

I didn't want to change the OP in the pro section to a HS quesiton but if you have the same play, R1 sliding beyond the bag at second and altering a play on the BR at first do you get 2 outs on the FPSR even though R1 was safe on the slide. I would think so as the FPSR is a penalizing rule. What do you guys think? Thanks, 1

Great, I'm fine with my call. I'll just kill it right away next time. Thanks, 1

I know we've talked about this a few times so please direct me to the post if it's easier then hashing it out again. batter bunts and the ball goes straight down and back up, at this point I heard a a second hit. I'm not sure if the batter had already dropped the bat and they met in the air or if the bat was still in the hitters hands. I'm sure the bat did not roll into the ball on the ground. Anyway F2 touched it foul and I killed it right away. The D wanted an out. I told him I've got nothing but a foul. So, my question. Should I have killed it as soon as I heard the second hit? If the ball went fair I think the D might have had a valid arguement leading me to think I should call foul immediatley. What do you think? Thanks, 1

great game Semper, that was more exciting to read then most of the games I officiate in real life.

one is correct, the other requires a funeral

Thanks, greatest play in baseball.

thanks sdix00, so the violations in 8.05 less (e). are they just nothing if no runners are on base? do you have one of your fancy note sheets for this to compare OBR/FED? we all like your cheat sheets BTW. 1
-
(OBR) this is not a balk question in that I'm not asking "is this a balk" my question is: an illegal pitch vs. a balk, from my reading an illegal pitch is a balk with runners on and from what I understand there is an exception for pitcher going to mouth... but an 8.05 viloation is not an illegal pitch without runners on except for 8.05(e) quick pitch. so would you find this statement to be true: an illegal pitch is a balk w/runners on (note hand to mouth exception) an 8.05 balk is not an illegal pitch without runners on with exception of (e). did my question make sense? thansk, 1

good baseball. nice job batter

I'll bet the guy is a real rules nerd. No, but his dad is. My son is a freakin stud out there. I wish I had half his baseball instincts. Both of my boys have been trained by Semper and work very hard for him. He can work with me anytime. Works harder and better than a lot of adults. Only bad thing was had to give him my spray bottle and rag to clean his shoes off....lol sounds like his old man needs to get him a KFINN FSB for his next birthday.

I don't have my WUM in front of me but any outs made on a stealing runner during a BOO stand. 1

I have to say "wow" to this because I cant see anything other than a short answer to this question at an association meeting. I can understand a newbie asking it and its a good question but the answer is fairly well known so there shouldnt be any discussion about it. if it helps this was my LL association not my HS association... still not a good excuse but it's the only one I have. 1
