  1. I think I was the first to bid on it. I was surprised to see that it took about two days to hit the forum. I've been trying to get one of the old style Champion P210's and have been striking out. So I thought I'd try to get this one.
  2. Yawetag, thanks. That video is very helpful, simple and to the point. Thanks again.
  3. I was actually thinking along the lines of any DVD's that are out that some of the guys here could recomend.
  4. Being so new to umpiring, what video would you guys suggest for learning proper two man mechanics. I have enjoyed this so much that I really want to get better and possibly get into doing high school games. I know that I will want to attend some camps and clinics, but for now what videos would be the best and where could I buy/order them from. Thanks in advance!
  5. Just some more info on me personally. My everyday job is that of a coach/mentor at a residential treatment center for troubled teens. A lot of our job training is based on how to be firm and in control wothout making someone feel attacked. I definately did not talk to the coach like we were buddies at all and I wouldn't really even say thay it was a conversation as such. I really wanted to get my point accross to the man without belittling him in front of his team and felt I had accomplished that. I figured that they had had enough of a bad example on how a gentleman should act. If he does this again I probably will deal with it more like some of you guys are suggesting.
  6. I was the PU in a local rec league 10U last night and had my first issue with a coach. The coach had a select team of 10yo that were a traveling competetive team and had sign up for the rec league just so the could stomp the snot out of everyone else. For the first two innings this guy was chirping at every pitch and had something to say about every call on the field. Most of the time it was a snyde, passive comment. I finally got tired of it and called to him and met him halfway down the 3b line. I just said to him quietly, " sir, I have treated you and your team as gentlemen and with respect, in turn I expect the same from you. If you can't manage that I'll have to deal with it in the appropriate manner. Do you understand what I'm saying." The coach just said "yes, sir" and returned to the dugout and I neverheard another word from him until he came to shake my hand after the game. has any one else had something similar happen to them?
  7. Hey all, I'm Doug and am rather new to the umpiring thing. My oldest son played from age 6 - four years of varsity ball in high school and my youngest is playing U12 Utrip ball. I kinda got into this by accident - a couple of years ago the local rec league had an umpire not show up and I was asked (on the spot) to fill in. I guess I did ok because they asked me if I would do it on a regular basis. At the time I didn't feel I should because my son was playing in the league and did not want other parents trying to say that I was being impartial and playing favorites, or for my son to catch grief from his peers. So I thanked them and said no. This year my youngest was asked to play on a select team that is playing in a diferent league and needless to say I got a phone call that started with " Now you don't have an excuse not to". So I agreed to do a few games. Then the guy who was the regular umpire was caught with something other than water in his water jug behind home plate and I became the regular umpire. So far, I've had a lot of fun and done mostly ages 9-12. With the younger kids I find that I do a lot of teaching about the game and I really enjoy that. I'll soon be doing the 13-16 boys. I originall found this site looking for info on protective equipment, but have found it very useful for much more. I would really like to get some proper training and get into doing high school ball and would welcome any help in that department. I'm slowly acquiring all of the gear to be a proper umpire and am loving the chance to be connected to the game I've loved since I was a kid. Doug
  8. Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and to umpiring. I'm doing rec league up to15U ball and am in the process of acquiring my gear. I quickly learned the importance of a hardshell CP with ample clavical protection in a 12U game and upon reading that many of you guys like the old model Champion P210 - I went on a witchhunt for one. I called one place and talked to the guy and he assured me that the one he had in stock was the old model, so I ordered it. Well, when it came in I discovered that it was the newer style Champion CP. I called the company back and they agreed to let me return it and they would even pay return shipping. The CP was about $45 including shipping. I guess what I'm asking is - is there really too much wrong with this new style of CP and would it give me adequate protection for the level of ball that I'm working? I'm on a somewhat limited budget and would love to be able to afford a Wilson Plat. or Gold, but with all of the other stuff I need to get going, I just can't swing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug
