Observed this during my son's varsity HS game. Bottom of the 1st the leadoff hitter uses his foot to wipe out the front line of the batters box. Not subtle. He swept it like it was curling. I've never had this happen but curious if others have and/or what they've done or would do about it.

Yep. It has been said that the threat of getting punched in the nose (literally) would change this behavior. Not condoning it but it is an interesting downstream effect of a more civil society (more physically civil at least).

Anecdote that comes to mind: friend was board president of one of our local LL's. They were debating volunteer vs paid umps. Some of the board members (not random parent) said "if we pay them I'll feel better about yelling at them."

Maybe, and we all work with that to some degree. I find what frustrates me is the b.s. aimed at the kids. That's the stuff I find myself wanting to respond to (and have the one time I truly talked to the fence as they were getting on my 16yr old partner).

You absolutely are not alone. I find myself laughing and/or shaking my head at them (and letting them see it). It may not help the situation but it makes me move on. I also currently only work in one league that I know / am known - for good or bad, lol (though post-season is coming soon).

funny anecdote: local LL field redid their OF fence with a gap just over 3" between the top of the chainlink and the yellow pipe fence topper. Game one, opening day, UIC has plate and tells coaches "hey, this is there but not a real issue, ha ha". Welp, guess who won the pony? That game, ball on the fly goes right through it the gap. D'oh!

Having gone through this a bit (but not very deep as my son decided not to play in college) there isn't that much money to be had unless you are the top of the top and yes, it's the rare parent that recognizes their kid is not that so your statement is true but hopelessly naively so on the parents part. This is why I slip this in as much as I can in every conversation I have with parents. Shifting gears slightly, the article and discussion is great. Not needed. Are you referring to it saying "mound" or (what I think he meant to say) "rubber"? If so, in this case where they want to appeal at home, how is it not a pitch and the batter not entitled to hit it? Any other base, I'm with you.
