  1. Happened Tuesday against Detroit in the first inning. Here is the link too. Embed doesn't look like it works: http://m.mlb.com/video/v382780283/detchc-miggy-recovers-on-pickoff-throw-nabs-fowler/?c_id=mlb Your browser does not support iframes.
  2. How was this overturned? How do they know that no part of his back leg that was on the ground touched the front corner of the plate? Just don't think this one was clear cut enough to overturn.
  3. There is some really bad advice in this thread. I'll let you guys figure out where it is coming from.
  4. 1. There is no reason to give any verbal on any swinging strike, even if it is strike three, other than if it is a check swing and you need to verbalize "Yes he did". 2. You definitely should give the "No catch" verbal if there is any question, in addition to the safe signal. Like someone said, the batter and catcher need a verbal so they know the status of the ball.
  5. The play on R3 if U3 goes out is exactly the reason he is where he is. Not experimental at all.
  6. The rest of us miss more than one or two....
  7. Why did you need to ask the rhetorical question?
  8. I would probably call time when the ball comes to a rest when you realize it isn't crossing the first/third base line. I did think about it for a few minutes in regards to what you guys are talking about. It's not a pitch though so you can't let it play out and let runner's keep advancing, and all runners including the batter didn't advance, so you have to enforce the balk.
  9. No.
  10. This is what I had when watching the video.
  11. Deep B is a 3-man position on 90' fields as well. It is done even when the infielders aren't playing in.
  12. Someone needs to tell the fashion police in this thread that those lowly pro umpires from rookie ball to Triple A all wore navy up until about five years ago. I wear black and light blue because I work college baseball and that is what is worn. There is nothing inherently wrong with navy, it has just gone out of style in some places. You can still look plenty professional in navy. Hell, the umpires who wear black could walk on the field next spring in navy every game and no one would be the wiser.
  13. Maddon said he never saw Rackley give the "off the base" signal after the safe call. (Even though Rackley did do it) He can be a rat but this wasn't one of those times. As a Cubs fan I am glad he is on our bench.
  14. If he feels the need to tell you about it during the game, it should be quiet enough where it's just you two talking and no one knows what is going on. A positioning clinic during the game is a terrible habit to get into. You should stay on the line and move up to within 10-12 feet from first base, squaring up to the pitcher. Make sure you can see the pitcher's entire body between the first baseman and the runner. If the runner is in the way, move up closer.
  15. If you watch the view from the dugout, U3 follows the ball as it goes toward dead ball territory. I'm not sure he actually saw the OBS, so I can see why U2 called it.
  16. The Wilson "Team Wendy" style pads are better than the Team Wendy pads in my experience.
  17. This is correct. Good timing is the proper use of the eyes. Good timing doesn't mean you wait for a certain event to happen. I still give a quiet "Out" verbal even when the runner is out by 10 steps.
  18. He was in the windup. That's the only way it could be legal.

    triple play

They need to teach the players the rule on this. Why did R3 feel the need to leave the base when he never had to?
  20. The district host school hires their district umpires. They take input from the coaches in the district tournament, including letting them scratch umpires they don't want to see. In the sectional and quarterfinal round, the home school picks two of the umpires, and the visitor picks the third. The state selects the umpires for the state championships (Final Four). They go off of recommendations from local assigners and probably use coaches ratings too. Football and basketball is totally different. The state hires all officials past the district round. Missouri doesn't give a damn about baseball and softball.
  21. The only other thing they beat into the ground more than this is check swings. It's a nightly discussion on the network. That and Harold Reynolds' unnatural obsession with runner's lane interference.

    Balk!

Saw this too. At first I thought it was nitpicking. The more I think about it the more I think it was right. I only saw the replay once, but it looked like Rizzo only went toward the base because the pitcher threw it there. I will be interested to see the video too.
  23. The strike zone is called closer to the book zone than ever and the zone is more consistent from umpire to umpire than ever before as well. These guys on MLB Network do this all the time to generate discussion and ratings. And yes, Byrnes is the biggest clown on there.
  24. This isn't that big of a deal, they just need to be specific like the NCAA is. You have to record ball/strike warnings, bench jockeying warnings, etc. in NCAA baseball. This should be similar. The automatic stuff will still be automatic. I do wish the FED rule makers would fix other idiotic FED rules before they bother with stuff like this.
