  1. I know I've posted this before, but add me to the list of people who hate the new polywools. Don't hang well, too lightweight, no permanent crease. The base pants are particularly awful. I know Honigs reads this site at times. I don't expect them to do anything because it's all about saving money on their end and charging the same amount of money to us. If people will quit buying them maybe they'll get the message. In the mean time I hope someone else comes out with some new pants. I always wondered what would happen if Honigs quit making the real polywools. I guess we found out. All they would have to do is take an old version to a new supplier and have them recreate the old pants.
  2. If the right fielder is going toward the RF line, the BU is looking at the numbers on his back and his no angle for the catch/no catch. The PU has to take this play. In this situation, with the batted ball taking the right fielder hard to the line, the PU has responsibility for catch/no catch, fair/foul, and the ball if it threatens the fence. These are all far more pressing issues than R3 tagging up at third. On top of that, if the ball is hit as deep as the OP describes, R3's tag up isn't going to be close. I don't see how R3's tag up is the most important thing here. The status of the ball is the most important thing. Touches and tag ups come after that. This is a limitation/compromise of 2-man umpiring
  3. This isn't a conference option. It sounds like the umpire is just trying to work outside and take plays coming at him. I would have to see it. I know there is a really old mechanic where U3 takes steal plays from the outside like in softball. Your conference doesn't have to approve using Deep B with R1 only. The NCAA allows that choice for everyone.
  4. Once I see the ball through U3's legs, I'm getting inside, which allows me to take the BR into second or back into first. If you pause and wait, you're asking to get trapped and not able to get to second for a play there.
  5. The base pants fit much tighter in the crotch/thighs than the old version. The plate pants aren't bad, but it seems like the leg openings are more tapered where they were more straight before. I just know I like my old polywools much better than the new ones.

You are correct for NCAA. If the interference happens before the B/R reaches first, the runners return to TOP bases. I assume OBR is the same but I don't know for sure.
  7. As a fan of an NL team, bring on the DH as soon as possible. It is awful watching the pitcher try to hit on a day-to-day basis. It's a free out and makes the game awful when you have two runners on with two outs and the pitcher's spot comes up. Might as well go to commercial break.
  8. If you want to get technical, rotations are clockwise, reverse rotations (In 3/4-man crews) are counter-clockwise. I wouldn't count helping with rundowns and getting to the 45-foot line as rotations, but that's just me.
  9. HATE the new Honigs PW base pants. Don't hang very well. Material is stiff and thinner than the old pants. I would send them back if they had not been altered already.
  10. I have three different manufacturers' shirts in the "newer" MLB shirts with the side piping. (Majestic, Smitty, Honigs) The Honigs version is the nicest of the three. Really soft, fits well, etc. They were both bought a year or more ago, so they probably have changed suppliers since then and their shirts may be junk like the rest of their stuff is now. The Majestics are nice too. The Smitty one I have is too baggy and fits like a tall kitchen trash bag, and the material is stiff.
  11. I didn't say it wasn't anyone's choice. I am just saying I have never been shown why it is beneficial.
  12. I have never been taught by anyone at clinics or by more experienced partners who I trust that you should ever start off the foul line while a runner is being held at first. I don't know why you would need to be off the line in that situation.
  13. I wore the new Honigs PWs for the first time Saturday. The material is not nearly as heavy/thick as the old stuff, so they don't hang as well as the old ones. I need to see about getting a traveler's crease put in them also. Disappointed in Honigs...charging the same money for inferior products.
  14. No, they don't. I think the Ultimates might.
  15. Yep. Or to the other base umpire(s) if there are three or more of you on the field.
  16. I know there was disagreement in the NCAA ranks in at least one of the meeting locations about the play. I just think it's a 50/50 play at worst, and in that case I'm not rewarding the defense for not getting out of the way.
  17. I don't feel like the runner initiated all of the contact, plus you don't need contact for obstruction. He was turning back to run toward the plate, how is that not an attempt at a base? I'm not against leaving the ball live when a runner initiates contact trying to draw obstruction, but I think in real time on a play like this, you don't split hairs.
  18. I stand by the assertion that my breakout group in Chicago mostly agreed that the rundown play was obstruction, and personally I still have obstruction after watching the video several times. The catcher's leg is still in front of the runner as he turns to run back toward the plate. 99 percent of us are going to call this obstruction in real time. The correct answer on the test is to leave the ball live and in play though. There is absolutely zero chance it is interference of any kind on the runner. There is no way you could get him for deviating more than three feet from his base path. That is grabbing the sh*tty end of the stick. I thought the test was better written and easier to understand this year than in previous years.
  19. Yep. The basketball shirts fit like tarps, the material on the highest-priced version is terrible, and the 3" side panel insert stops at the arm pit and doesn't extend down the sleeve. I have a basketball shirt from them from about three years ago and it is one of my favorites.
  20. FYI, the new Honigs polywools do NOT have the silicone bead in the crease like the old version did. I just got plate and base polywools in January and they don't have it. They also fit tighter in the waist than the old polywools and they are 75% polyester/25% wool now and are machine washable. Honigs has switched suppliers and these pants are not nearly as nice as the older versions. They have switched suppliers on a lot of their stuff (Basketball shirts is the other I've noticed) and the quality has suffered a lot. I used to like Honigs' stuff but I am starting to doubt them.
  21. I like the written warning/restriction as one step. Why should anyone get multiple warnings? The restriction is a warning by itself. You shouldn't get a written warning, then restriction (Another warning), then ejection.
  22. From my recollection, they talked about how he could have used better timing and not called the runner out first before calling obstruction. I could be thinking of entirely the wrong play, but I'm 95 percent sure almost everyone in our breakout room thought this was obstruction. I really wish we could post the video so everyone could see it in the same place.
  23. Are you talking about the breakout session? In the room I was in, OBS was by far the overwhelming opinion, including the two presenters. There is no way it could be interference. The catcher didn't even have the ball. What/who would the runner be interfering with? It was either OBS or nothing.
  24. Is this the rundown where U3 called OBS and scored the runner? Where the runner ran into the catcher going back toward the plate? The consensus on this was that OBS was the correct call, at least in Chicago.
  25. I have the gap protection only because I wanted a shorter Douglas and the 12" that I bought already had it. I was originally like Salami, but it can't hurt anything.
