​He got the correct answers above. Don't muddy the waters. If the BR had reached first base by the time the ball was thrown, it is two bases from the time of throw.

In FED it's a one-base award, so the runner is getting third either way if you call obstruction.

​Yep. I'm thinking about keeping it myself if no one buys it soon. Strip the rubber coating off, have it sandblasted/powdercoated a dark gray or charcoal color, and throw some new pads on it and it would be sweet. You're local, so I'll sell it for $15 if I don't have to ship it.

The Rawlings TI is EXTREMELY light. I picked up a catcher's Rawlings a couple weeks ago and it was like holding a paper clip.

And ASA is a softball organization. There are lots of things softball does that any competently-trained baseball umpire wouldn't think of doing.

My favorite is the out call that ends the game.

EVERY time I've seen a baseball or softball umpire on the bases with an indicator, he looks at it constantly. ​ ​And you shouldn't carry an indicator because you're not working the plate. Reverse rotating is a mechanic. Whether or not to carry an indicator is not.

If you're not going to use your lineup wallet, plate brush, and ball bags on the bases, don't use your indicator either. Professional and college umpires that work 2-man games don't use them on the bases either. If both guys just do their job, it isn't an issue. You should be able to keep the count in your head on the bases. What the hell else are you doing that is requiring your attention? (I'm not sure why this is in the "mechanics" section)

B with runners on 1st only or 1st and 3rd C with all other combinations of runners

I guess we're supposed to roll over to businesses that act like jackwagons.... Unfortunately all umpire suppliers have their issues. I like Officially Sports and Purchase Officials, but they don't have some of the brands I use. I've never had a problem personally with Honigs but I've read stories. Their website isn't great but I don't need 10 high-res shiny pictures to figure out how to order mask pads. Everyone worships at the feet of Ump-Attire but I've had two bad experiences with them in the last year where they won't stand behind products and won't price match according to their own policy.

Pretty sure that at the NCAA meetings, they said you should identify that there is a suspension immediately (For being bumped for example), then you can let them know the number of games before you leave the field when the game is over. Now they want the number of games to be communicated before the next pitch I guess.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I filled out the survey. They need to fix their ridiculously stupid definition for backswing and follow through interference. What everyone else calls "backswing interference", they call "follow through interference" and it is an out just like a normal batter's interference. FED's "backswing interference" is when the batter is taking a practice swing and accidentally hits the catcher's mitt before the pitch is even thrown. They want you to kill it and reset. Just make it like every other rule set. They have this need to be different just for the hell of it.

Dispute the charge on your credit card. Tell them you paid for (I assume you paid already) the coat and never received it. I've never had a problem with them but I would dispute this in a heartbeat.

I still have some Smitty shirts in the "old" style and they're my favorite brand in that style. I wear their basketball shirts too and like them. Dalco is just about the lowest rung of umpire shirts.

As for the original post at the top, there are TONS of threads on here about equipment going back several years. All the replies in this thread will match those old threads pretty much to the T. Just take an hour or two and sit down and search until your heart's content. "The best" is very subjective for umpire equipment. What one guy loves, someone else hates.

Can you post a disclaimer when you are shilling for a company?

The Champion hard shell is low profile and doesn't give you the "linebacker" look of the Wilson protectors. I've seen a lot of guys wear it this year. The All Star System 7 is also very low profile. It and the Douglas are just pricier. If I were just getting started and didn't want to spend $150+, I would get a Champion.

My concern with this is a checked swing with an uncaught 3rd strike. It appears this mechanic is spreading. I don't understand your concern. (I haven't had my coffee yet so it could be that my brain isn't functioning yet) Could you explain? A lot of umpires give the "safe" signal if the ball is not caught on a third strike. I try to only do it if the catch/no-catch by the catcher is close, so there isn't a question about the status of the ball. If it bounces two feet in front of the plate and the batter swings, I just give the point to the right to signal a strike and verbalize "no catch". I think Jim is saying he is worried that people will interpret the umpire's "no catch" signal for a "no swing" signal by the PU. If it is a half swing situation and you have a swing as the PU, you should point to the swing and verbalize it before you give any catch/no catch indication. This is a different situation... your talking about a UC3 .. they are talking about Check swings I know, but they were talking about confusion between the two. I see the point of confusion. While "yes he did" should happen before the "safe no catch" signal, sometimes you don't get a chance to say yes he did because everyone is acting as if he did. When that happens we might just give the safe signal on the no catch. If you have been using the safe signal on no swing it might be confusing. Agree. Hence the reason not to use a safe signal for no swing. Just a verbal.

I don't know if it's the same Facebook group that you guys are talking about, but I've now joined and left the big umpiring Facebook group twice in the last year or so. I joined it this spring for the second time but left it just a couple of weeks ago. I could not stand it on my news feed. Between the teenagers posting stuff that had nothing to do with umpiring and the general dumbassery (My new favorite word by the way), I couldn't take it anymore. Someone fill me in on John Gray.

You really only want to go out from the middle if a ball is threatening the wall. With that said, in your situation I would say it would work better for everyone involved if no one goes out from the middle.
