How often do you get chirping from the stands?
Mussgrass replied to SCRookie's topic in Free For All
One thing about proper timing on balls and strikes. I often hear someone holler "nice pitch" or "good eye" before I make my call and signal. That is good as long as we don't allow that to influence what we call. -
R2 should have been running laps for not ending up on 3rd with 2 outs.

Correct me if I am wrong. The video is NCAA rules. I didn't think they have dead ball appeals. As such the ball would have needed to be made live to have a valid appeal. That doesn't change the fact that the runner may have gone too far to correct the miss of the plate and going back to touch would be nothing. I would guess the umpire would signal nothing in that case. I would bet the catcher indicated to the umpire that the runner missed the plate, which would have been a valid verbal dead ball appeal under Fed rules. The runner would be out before she makes it back to the plate.

Interference on runner who already scored
Mussgrass replied to UmpireTommy's question in Ask the Umpire
I guess (of course, no video) I envision R1 holding up to make sure the ball doesn't get caught while the BR runs hard the whole way, putting him right behind R1 as they circle the bases. -

I agree that without video we can't really judge accurately. However, if the BR is attempting to score and the lead runner right in front of him had to slide into HP then that lead runner probably won't have time to get out of the way, and as such would not be guilty of INT unless he did something intentional. -

How long before ejections result in First Amendment suits?

Sounds like the coach is a creampuff. The father was not threatening or rude in any way according to what the article reported. Certainly there was no reason to ban him from games. Maybe there is more that wasn't reported. That said, is it really worth the expense and trouble of a lawsuit? Suck it up, dad. I am sure the daughter is embarrassed beyond belief by her dad's behavior. -
Batter hits homerun and misses a base, how many runs score??
Mussgrass replied to DaveAM's question in Ask the Umpire
Under NFHS where dead ball appeals are allowed would it make any difference if, for example, F4 of F6 notices the miss and immediately says something to an umpire? It is a dead ball if the ball was hit over the fence, but must the action be allowed to "play out" before a dead ball appeal will be entertained? -
Pop up hits fair just beyond 1st; skips back and crosses foul line before 1st!
Mussgrass replied to buckyswider's question in Ask the Umpire
See the part I bolded. The batter would be out on the IFF. Would this then be a 2 base award for the base runners? -
Is there such a thing as a close play?
Mussgrass replied to andydufresne's question in Ask the Umpire
Are there any games where we don't go over a couple of calls in our minds later on wondering if we got them right? Maybe I'm the weird one. Maybe it shows we do care. -
I will say my partner was a 16 year old young man. He played in this league when he was that age and just finished his sophomore year of HS ball. So he knows the game. That said, he would probably not have known to kill it if he saw it. I'll mention it the next time I see him.

The other night on the game ending play the batter grounded out to F1, who threw to F3 for the out. Teams come out and line up. As we are leaving the field the batter (12U) runs up and says the ball hit him on the foot. I said I did not see it and I looked at my partner and asked if he had anything. He did not. After we were outside the fence the coach asked (through the fence) and I told him the same thing. A few steps late a parent asked too. I don't know if the coach and the parent actually saw it or were going off of the player's report. I don't have any reason to think the player was lying. What can I do differently?

We all take ourselves too seriously sometimes. Not only on this subject. We're umpiring because it is fun. Just go and have fun and let the chips fall where they may.

At the least have your mask in your hand at all times, ready to put it on. I am serious.

A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught, and any foul tip that is caught is a strike, and the ball is in play. Does legally caught mean by the catcher? My mind tells me that it is not a foul tip if another play catches it. Does any rule set or interp specify the catcher? In one of the twitter comments someone mentioned it being a fair ball. That I know, this can never be a fair ball.

While the umpire could or should have been more emphatic in his signals and calls, I don't think we should be trying to bail out the catcher here. He glanced at the umpire very quickly, twice I believe, and missed the safe signal on the tag. That is a live ball in this instance, no different than the catcher having it in his mitt. Kudos to the runners for continuing to run the bases, and to their coaches who kept sending them.

I umpire in a 12U house league. I will take every strike I can get.

To the OP, where was the runner placed?
