Make sure you get a look at that ORANGE mohawk! And are those the new zigs I have been reading about? They do look like they might run a little narrow. -
Size?

Choice is not an option on a balk in OBR. Either all runners including the BR advance one base and the balk is ignored or if that doesnt happen then the balk is enforced and R1 goes to second and BR remains at bat with the same count. As to the OP, regardless of rule set, that guy screwed the pooch.

Question #1: How do you remedy this if at all? Ball everything that the catcher made look like a ball because of his setup. I never like to tell a catcher where to setup. You tell him he is too deep, so he moves up and then gets hit with the bat or something like that, and then says well the umpire told me to move up closer to the plate. I called time, walked up the line Don't go walking up there. You can say everything you need to say right from where you are at. Assure you make it a "warning." "Coach, you are not going to argue balls and strikes, this is your warning." Question #2: I realize it's only 9-10, but when I played semi-pro, college, and even high school, a coach or player loudly telling an umpire where a pitch was or wasn't was almost a surefire free ticket to the showers. Shut it down immediately. Acknowledge it, warn, then eject. I rung him up and before he left the field he yelled, "Are you serious! You gotta be kidding me! Outside!" I walked over and told the bench coach Stop leaving your position. You could have ejected the kid right there but if you are not going to eject him, acknowledge and warn the kid right from where you are at, then let the head coach know that the team has been warned. Any warning issued to a player applies to the team. I threw him out of the game. Good His manager came flying down the line, "What is your problem? That was unnecessary! Repeat previous action I feel like I call a very good game and have been praised over and over again by coaches from both teams all season Forget this right now. If you are going to believe and accept the praise from coaches that you are calling good games then you better believe and accept it when they tell you that you are terrible / horrible also. Look for praise from other umpires, not coaches. Coaches will lie, umpires will tell you the truth. Warnings are good and they work most of the time. I do not work this age group but I would say make sure the "manager / head coach" is aware of such warnings. Notifying the "bench coach" is useless and again a warning issued to a player applies to the team. Make sure you record the warning in your book.

How do you get dressed for a plate job?
kristoffae replied to guitarplaya2007's topic in Umpire Equipment
How many brand names can you jam into a getting dressed routine? Reads more like an Ump Attire catalog than a guide on how to get dressed- 66 replies

How do you get dressed for a plate job?
kristoffae replied to guitarplaya2007's topic in Umpire Equipment
That would have been an intersting conversation. "Hey Gunny, I have been watching you get dressed and wanted to discuss the fact that you put your blouse on before you put your trousers on. How has that been working out for you?" "Listen yoohoo, stop watching me get dressed!" End of discussion- 66 replies

Really? This is a topic? This forum is getting out of control if we are seriously discussing how we get dressed.- 66 replies

Then it sounds like you need clarification from them. Having us guess at what the rule is probably not going to help anyone.

Isn't UTrip OBR? Nothing in OBR about starting with 9 and ending with 8 so this would have to be some UTrip exception or Tourney rule. What do they say about it?

Umpire arrested on field....

" He was then tased two times while being arrested." -
Someone once explained to me that it is because left handed throwing catchers are rare. When working a with a righty batter and with a right handed throwing catcher (glove on his left hand), with a pitch that is off of the outside corner, typically the catcher has to reach across his body to catch the pitch. However, with a lefty batter, he is typically receiving the pitch that is off of the outside corner with little to no glove movement which will probably make your zone a little wider to lefty batters. If you had more left handed throwing catchers, the opposite would be the case. With a lefty batter, a left hand throwing catcher would typically have to reach across his body to catch the pitch that is off of the outside corner but with righty batters receive the same pitch with little to no glove movement.

In FED, with the pitcher in the "windup" position, in order to "disengage" he must step back off of the rubber with his non free (pivot) foot. So, if the pitcher was right hand throwing, he must step back with his right foot. If he stepped back with his free (non pivot foot), left foot then (and it was not an attempt to feint or throw to 2nd base) then that would be a balk. If your partner said he stepped off with his non pivot foot then that would be his free foot and for a right hand thrower his left foot, you have a balk.

Right down the middle, cock shot, one of those where everyone knows it is a strike, I call it. If the catcher moves his glove anywhere up, down, in, or out and drops it, I ball it.

I keep a 4 oz container of Lena Blackburn in the gear bag. I will rub the baseballs if they get them to me in advance of the game. At the high school level this is more of a professional courtesy. Any level above it is a professional responsibility.

Tape is just to keep the ends nice and stremlined so that they aren't flopping around.

Enforce the rule. The first jewelry offense during the game results in a team warning.

Here are the pics of my P220 and the delta flex. Much harder to take photos of myself than I thought it would be. As you can see (hopefully) the delta flex pulls the CP right up against my body and holds it up high and tight over the shoulders and around the neck area. Once it is on, it stays put. I never have to move it up or down at anytime.

I worked the AAU Nationals down here in the past. There is no official AAU logo. We were given er.... paid for black combo caps that had "AAU" on them but even that was not a standard set by AAU but rather the contracted association assigning for them. As for colors, if you match your partner AAU doesn't care. Again the assigning association mandated black or pro blue but that also was not a set AAU standard. From what I can tell, AAU is in the sports / event / take kids money business and definitely not in the officiating business at least at the national level. They contract the officiating out and then are done with it. Can't speak for local AAU organizations.
