I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that some states require officials (in some sports?) stay and observe this ritual.

In any event, someone will have recorded such incidents, as here, and referrals to the state athletic association and the criminal authorities are likely to ensue.

It has always amazed me (but I am not disappointed) that officials are not supposed to oversee the postgame "rituals" since the players are still on the field.  But hey, this is why I typically beat feet also.

Tangent: I love the well-written and heavily researched article that goes with it.  "baseball player punched an opponent following the 2A state championship game."  🙄

Here’s an even… more thorough* view and analysis of the event:

The handshake line coalesces a good 2-3 minutes after the final, game-ending Out. The winning team does the whole embrace, buddy-hugs, dogpile thing, and then forms the handshake line.

This asinine assault has no effect or bearing on that umpire crew, who were in locker room changing into civvies by then.

Recorded and referrals?? Our State Commissioner and his entire staff are seated behind the backstop screen, and there are vested State Troopers in each of the two flanking tunnels next to the dugouts. I think they got it.

It’s just a real shame that it happened in “my” state, and got enshrined on streaming video.

I have a local coach that asks us to stay every game of his I do.  The reason is he wants his players to thank us for coming.  I honestly think he is trying to teach them to be respectful of officials, but it grates me standing there when everything within me is telling me to run for it!

The kids probably a senior , so no real repercussions to be had.  I am sorry but make the coach & team pay to learn a lesson.   Suspend them from the postseason next year

My son just the had last game of his senior year (and forever unless he gets coax into college club ball). I had the laughing thought of getting tossed his last game (not for hitting anyone obviously, something mundane). I gripped a little bit when a bizarre play happened - fortunately he's learned over the years and avoided engaging.

I’m not at all amazed. And let’s not go down the rabbit hole of, “well gee, what if they only have 1 coach?”

On average, there’s 6 dudes employed by schools that can play sheriff after a game. I’m not hanging around when they want to make verbal (or worse) pot-shots, just so their kids get babysat.

If he’s a senior (likely an adult by this time in the school year), jail is a pretty good repercussion.

Sounds fair to next year’s seniors, huh? Get a grip.
