Everything non-varsity should have a time limit. Drop dead would be even better. Encourages pace of play, kills the three hour sloppy baseball game, and you’d likely get more umpires willing to do them after work etc.

I also wish HS would go to more of a tournament rule, something like 15/3, 12 or 10/4, 8/5.

Baseball would get more fans back too if we started time limits.  No one wants to be there over 2 hours for almost any level of baseball.  Even us die-hards are watching the clock after a couple of hours for 90% of these games.

But NO ONE (players, coaches, fans, umpires, etc.) wants to be there for any baseball game under Varsity longer than 2 hours.  Kids dragging in and out, coaches making 10 pitching changes, 18-20 walks, etc.  It's not even baseball at this point.

When did MO adopt a 15/3 for Varsity? It was 10/5 for the 10 years I umpired high school in the state, but I'll admit I haven't umpired a high school game in Missouri since 2017.

Time between innings is the worst when teams are just that way. Some teams get it, others don’t. Vast majority of varsity teams do. If they don’t, you ride that fine line of do I put them on a clock in a Varsity game and really look for possible trouble or just keep encouraging to move, get a catcher out, etc. Anything non Varsity (especially travel), I just dock the pitches. If they don’t care, I don’t care to give them their warm ups either.

That's what I try to do as well.  I control what I can control and don't go borrowing trouble.

I love the coaches that have to meet with the team after every half inning too.  Coach on Sat intentionally walked the batter everytime 1B was open, until the tying run came to the plate and then he let that guy bat who promptly responded by hitting a double and plating 2 runs. It was a JV game, but you just stand there and shake your head (internally of course) sometimes.

It’s pretty ridiculous that they have to meet when they come off the field, but as long as the first batter is in gear and getting ready, whatever. But meeting before taking the field? Drives me nuts. Instant I see it I say we need pitcher and catcher, and as long as they move, fine. If they don’t, just dock pitches or start counting from wherever you would have been until you hit 60. I’ve had coaches (daddy ball) get pissed I’m trying to hurry up this little strategy session. “I’m talking to my team!”  What is there to say, try to make an out when they hit it?

How I would do it:

JV games are 10/3, 8/4, 6/5, 20 at any time, 1:45 games, but becomes drop dead at 2:15.

Varsity is 20 at any time, 15/3, 10/4, 8/5, 6/6, drop dead at 3:30 unless in extras

We've gotten a touch away from the ejection part of all this, but....

In Virginia - at least my part of it - there were no time limits below varsity.  (There usually was only JV - no "freshman" games, nor did we have a lot of middle school.)  We played seven like the big fellas, and had the usual run rule.  And I don't recall it being a nightmare.

Here in San Antonio, I'm seeing time limits on ANYthing below varsity.  Part of that's because it's like a union shop here, with pay being set by the state and/or TASO.  (Fellow Texans, if I mis-state some of that please correct me nicely;  it's my first season here, and it's A Strange New World for me.)  As I understand it, sub-varsity is generally limited to 1:50 - but if they go down to 1:30, they can pay even less.

I have mixed emotions about it, since I was used to played 'real' school baseball.  But knowing there's a "use-by" time, even for some bigger kids, has its advantages, too.

Did you mean 2:30 for varsity?

What I cannot believe is that I am the only one on the board who has put anything in this section in a LONG time... and this was not even a fun or exciting EJ... just a run of the mill MC with no drama.

Let's face it: we all want more stories of epic 5+ EJ games and parking lot heckling that almost turns into daddies getting whooped...

Once I speak, and they hear that Merlin accent, hon, they're not going to need to rise to Sherlockian levels of deduction that I'm not from 'round these parts.

If it is like it is up here, he heard about it before you got done with the ejection mechanic. Lol

Steve @grayhawk is the guy in our association we are required to call to report any EJ, even before the reports is written. So the comment was a little tongue in cheek as I had called him before posting to UE about the EJ.
