That is a sad way to end it but I agree with the call as it does look like the coach gives R3 a push toward home so there is physical assistance. Are the announcers right - is there a LL rule that says no contact at all?

LL rule is same as OBR. First tap I don't have as assistance, second push was.

And an example of why we shouldn't give time for no reason.

Now, can you imagine the "argument tree" from the coach?

I've seen it and had to enforce it on restraining the runner, but nothing like that.  He did it.  It's like being a little bit pregnant.  You're still pregnant.

It's not as if he were giving him a pat on the back for a good play. It was an assist.

Without considering whether or not the call was correct, that kind of call is bad PR. If assignments are decided by non-umpires, that call will likely be considered the "wrong' way for a team to lose a game.

Does anybody grant the defense time when they request it?  I think that's the start of the issue -- the defense is accustomed to getting time whenever they ask and relaxed as if the ball was dead.

Why not grant time (if it was requested). Play was over, play was relaxed, after a big "holy crap" play they wanted to take a second to talk/compose themselves. I see no reason to not grant TIME.

You have to try and figure out why the player wants 'Time". (sometimes I'll even ask him). If the player wants to tie his shoe/adjust his equipment/has an injury, or is so hung out on the base he can't get up, I don't have a problem with killing the play. If, however, it's apparent (as in this case), it's a "I need Time so they won't run anymore", or 'I'm too lazy to climb the base and don't want to be tagged out", I'm not giving it to them. There was still a runner on first, with no less than 6 players hanging around third base. I'm giving the kid an opportunity to advance.

I agree with the phrase 'LL crap', but wtf are you talking about? The runner on third has every right to try to make it home, just not with a coach assisting him.

Umpires calling time on this play for no reason would be the LL BS.

Yes.  They didn't grant it.

You can see the player w/ his hands up at least physically asking for time in the video.  Whether or not he was verbal, we'll never know.  Either way it didn't matter b/c it wasn't granted.

But was he asking for time to freeze everything because they couldn't catch or throw or was he asking so he could go and settle down his pitcher?

I get it.  We don't need to grant time.  I don't have a problem w/ how the crew handled the play.

This was a very educational video for me. I never would have even though to make that call on this and probably would have (or may have) overlooked that small push but the call makes sense now that I've seen it. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
