I still contend that it isn't important that they are good on the bases anymore.  They just make a call so that one coach or the other can initiate the real call to be made.  MLB umps have to be good at balls and strikes...and somebody somewhere is working on an electronic system to make that Perfect.

I don't think I could call him safe looking at the play from where Meals was standing.

On the other hand. How could you call him out?

You could see he was going to ring him up but something changed his mind.

I just think I would need to see daylight to say he was off the bag.

I agree but with the position he had he could not see daylight and he could not see if he touched it.

Pure guess.  50-50 chance.  And the replays didn't help at all.

No disagreement from me.  I guess it boils down to whether or not you make your judgment based on visual evidence, or the lack of it.  50/50 either way as you said.

I'd be on the side of getting the out!

Looked like the fielder kept trying to hunt for the base with his foot after the initial step....he wouldn't have done so if he thought he solidly had the bag.

like I said ................ use what the players give you ...........F4's reaction says ....'dammit I missed it' ......there was ZERO argument/reaction from him

I've got two theories to throw out there..

  1. Over-correcting the initial bad timing and losing track of the play???
  2. Had doubt of what he thought he initially saw and didn't get any additional info to confirm either???
