Outs and score do not matter. Ball hit into deep F6 so I know its going to be a close play. F6 makes a diving stop pops up amd throws. Ball takes a hop before first, runner beat the ball to the bag. Coach yells "recognize a good play!" I could care less what he thinks. Do some umpires feel indifferent? Calling him out when its that close? The batter busted his ass and so did F6.

Call it like you see it.

In my head..... holy crap....... that was an awesome play...... now he's gonna throw over to first...... I better make sure that I have a good angle. Move in the working area to stay out of the way, follow the play into 1B, and call the runner safe because he beat the throw.

Who cares what the coach, the player, or the peanut gallery thinks. You know you got it right.

I will recognize a good play by saying something to F6 when I get to the "B". You have to call it like you see it. The only thing you have out there is your integrity. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

You did recognize a good play by the runner beating out the throw.

He is saying that do you give the out to the defense because it was a great play even though he was safe? I say no call it as you see it Jeff - via Tapatalk

Call it as you see it. I like seeing good plays as much as the next guy, but we have to call a fair, consistent game within the rules.

I'm watching the play, I know I might have a banger to call. My focus is on that bag, and listening for that pop of the glove. I know they're gonna come real close to one another. I need full concentration on that. I'll be damned if I have time to think, "wow, that F6 made a nice stab on that grounder. Batter beat the throw, but I think I'll reward the SS with an out call"....

I can't think that fast.

"recognize the good play"..Sounds a lot like "you owe us one" after two bangers go against the same team.

Thanks yall! Like I said it was a good play by f6. Runner beat the throw and he was safe....like i mentioned the score or outs did not matter...maybe he felt he deserved an out call.

Coaches always feel entitled for calls to go their way.

Slippery slope.

OF COURSE NOT!

in 1977 this was acceptable, if the defense made a great play and it was close, reward the defense... if the batter did something to beat the offense reward him.. But guess what.. WE CAN NOT UMPIRE LIKE THIS ANYMORE.....so good job on calling what you see.

I will say, "good play", "good tag" or something like that, but that doesn't affect the call. I have been told that sometimes I say, " Good pitch", as I punch out a called third strike. I deny that, as I have never heard myself say that out loud. I will admit that I think it a lot.

You want to have fun with the fans?

Do this if you have a double play in 10U and 12U ball:

Call the out at second then really wait a long time after the out is made at first, freezing in hands on knees position then explode shouting “double play!†with a dramatic punch-out.

The stands will go crazy!

PURE SHOWBOATING.

It helps if you are slightly inebriated.

After a swinging 3rd strike on a nasty breaking pitch, I've been known to say something to F2 like, " that was nasty", or "nice pitch". Never ever when the batter could hear it, and never ever on a called 3rd K.

It had to have been a good play by the batter-runner too for not taking a base hit for granted and busting his ass down the line, no?

That's what I said!

As long as the batter doesn't hear you, the third strike is usually the best time to recognize a good pitch and have a little fun with the catcher. After all, you're just complimenting the pitch.

However, one of the best compliments came from a batter after he took a third strike. The pitcher had just thrown a beautiful sharp breaking ball which caught the outside corner. The batter froze, listened to my strike three call, and then turned his head to us, smiled and said, "That's just wrong!" He shook his head as he took the long walk back to the bench.

Reminds me of those easy punch-outs you get when the batter sighs and is already stepping towards the dugout before you even begin your punch-out.
