This is the story from the post I made in "Try and keep coaches in the game".

To set the story. The place I work league/rec ball is the epitome of keep coaches in the game. In the past, the board has allowed the inmate to run the asylum and get away with murder. If there happened to be an ejection (rare), said coach was allowed to return his next game no matter how bad it was ( This has gotten better. Now we have 1,3,5 game suspensions with a fourth resulting in a ban). Admittedly, I have a high ejection rate... Partly because of my game management (a weak part of my game, but it's getting better), and partly because we still have some malcontents who don't believe the rules apply to them.

Anyway, it's was towards the end of fall ball. We never have enough veteran umpires. The ball is crap, pays not much better and it's football season. I only do it to keep sharp and I get to hand pick my partner, so I try to get a kid that wants to learn. The guy(lets call him Tommy) I was working with is really green, but works hard and is learning pretty quick. Still missing some rotations and the like, but he's progressing nicely.

We have the Blue team and the Red team. A few games back, Tommy missed a missed base and called safe on an appeal. Blue team HC isn't happy and after giving him the business, I break it up and send him back to his dugout. Not so much as a whimper the rest of the game.

Fast forward. We've got Blue and Red again. Good game. Blues in the field, Red batting. R1, and the balls hit to dead center bringing F8 in. Tommy goes out, I've got BR. He rounds first then retreats, seconds ahead of the throw, and he's safe.

I get back into portion behind the plate and they are trying to get F1 to appeal a missed touch at first. Of course the kid balks (never fails) and I move the runners up. I forget about it, thinking surely they aren't dumb enough to try and appeal again (I know, it's a stretch, but I was trying to give them credit).

Well, I was wrong. As soon as I put the ball back in play, F1 steps off and throws to first asking for an appeal. I don't call anything. Blue Coach asks "What's the call?!?!" I call time, take my mask off and start to explain.

Me: Coach, you can't...

Coach : WHAT!?!? (As he is running at me). You never watch what's going on (Boom ). I'm sick of this crap. You need to pay attention. Yada, Yada, Yada.

By this time Tommy has made his way to me and has gotten between us. He may be young, but what he lacks in age he has in size (6'6", 250 lbs). He escorts him off the field and we start again. Between innings we get together (Fall Ball habit. Gotta work with them when I can), he informs me that the coach is standing down the right field fence. I ask the new coach to tell him to leave, he complies and the EJed coach leaves. No more problems.

About three weeks ago, I was at the store with my wife and kids. Someone taps me on the shoulder and I turn and look. It's the coach I EJed. He apologized and I've long since let it go. His last question was why I tossed him. I told him, "the word "you", but your day was done as soon as you shot out of the dugout and came running at me. If my wife won't get in my face and yell at me, why would I allow a coach to do so?" He pondered this thought for a minute, apologized once again and said it would happen again. I hope not, but I doubt it.

During an argument, have you ever turned away from your wife and given her a giant motion and yelled "YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!!"?

Why did he go out with R1??

Sorry, did you say something about an ejection?

You lost me a bit on this too… Good EJ, but that's one very weird rotation.

I got dinged on an eval a couple years ago because I didn't go out on a fly ball that F8 had to move in on with R1.  So there are some associations which expect this rotation.

I've NEVER heard of this rotation in 2-man mechanics. Some versions of 3-man, yes, but never 2-man. What system has BU go out with runners on?

I was surprised by this eval feedback and to this day still think the evaluator got it wrong.  In 2-man I agree with your statement.

It should be called the Powderkeg System. Sooner or later, it's gonna blow...

He wasn't supposed to. It kinda put me in limbo, but thankfully it didn't end to bad. I had told him just to pivot. Just a new guy with maybe 4 games under his belt.

Are you sure he meant to literally "go out" to the outfield? The standard mechanics I use want the BU to go (out) to the lip of the infield grass for trouble balls while in B or C. I've just never heard of one having to cross the baseline.

-EDIT-

I should clarify - I've never heard of one in two man having to cross...

Wow BU should never go out from infield.

My memory is going on me. I found the eval report and what I posted is inaccurate. I got dinged for not going out from "A" on a fly ball to F8 which the evaluator thought I should have considered a potential trouble ball. My bad, did not mean to derail this thread...

Only when it became personal. If she had only yelled about the situation rather than me, she could have stayed.

From the OP, I don't understd: "I've got BR. He rounds first then retreats, seconds ahead of the throw, and he's safe." ...how could DHC think there was a missed base? Even if BR missed it on the initiate rounding, you had him safe back at 1B. I dunno understand how DHC thought that he had a missed base appeal opportunity.

Next thing I don't understand (game management), you say that you were starting to explain, then DHC ran at you. So you must have been hollering your explanation to DHC before he got to you...that's not good. Disclaimer: the following advice is for daddy/know-nothing coaches: I don't like to go to the coach to explain something that he should already know, but sometimes in daddy-ball, it is the better game management technique. If I wanted to explain why he lost his appeal opportunity, or why there wasn't a missed base anyway or anything that I thought needed explaning, I would start walking to the HC and beckon him to meet me away from any audience and do my explaining in a hushed tone that only he and I can hear. He may still fly off the handle, but you try to handle it is a quiet/professional manner. If you're hollering, "coach, you can't..." towards the dugout, you're asking for trouble.

just out of curiosity what did he do to balk?

Stepped towards first, didn't throw.

@ricka56

The dugouts are maybe 20 feet away from the plate. It wasn't like I was yelling halfway across the field. It was said in a conversational tone. I honestly don't know how he thought he missed first. The best I can come up with is this guy can't let go of the past and is a DB.

I agree with the second part. It was fall ball and most of the "coaches" are dads that are basically babysitting so the kids can play. I was trying to be nice and explain why he couldn't appeal, and as they say, no good deed goes unpunished.
