I just logged on and saw the header on the site and am saddened to hear of Michael's death. I can't claim to have known him except through his posts, but his contributions to this site and advice to all of us will be missed.  RIP!!!

Does anyone have any thoughts on possibly renaming the Member of the Month award after Mike? Thoughts are appreciated.

I'm against it. Can't anything exist for its own sake without naming it after someone? Roads, bridges, stadia, games, fields, courts, awards, professorships, head coaches, seats....geez.

Mike was a brother to us. He was one of the best umpires and friends that has ever walked on this earth.  He deserves every single honor that we can give him. You don't understand what he has done for this site and for baseball in general.  Not only has Mike helped me on here but he helped  me get through a rough part of my personal life too.  To him I'm eternally grateful.

Forget just deleting it, dude... take your ball and go home. You only have 8 posts here so you obviously don't know how the site is. Don't throw your 2 cents in on stuff when you're clueless.

He is entitled to his opinion, no matter how isolated. His ignorance of who MST was to us, and how special he was to everybody he came in contact with, is obvious.

He will either learn or disappear.

id get kicked off this site for saying what i really want to say to you so ill leave it at this…..whether or not you posted on this site you should be able to tell by the posts that everyone else has made on this thread that mike is one of (if not) the most respected members on this site and a dear friend to all of us. so take your disrespectful opinion and shove it

Very sorry to hear about Mike.  I am by no means an active member on this site, but I can say without a doubt that Mike was absolutely Top Notch!  He had an uncanny way to bring excellent insight to ANY conversation on this site.  Always in a professional and caring way.  He is what most of us strive to be.  He will surely be missed.  RIP

I've had a very busy schedule the past week and have been off site . I don't often post ,but I'm frequently lurking in the background . I'm a veteran umpire that has learned much from this great board . Mike's insights and advice will be missed . I never knew Mike in person , yet I'm typing this with tears in my eyes . Such is my appreciation for this board and all who contribute to it !

during the season, just at random times during the evening I would get a text message from Mike. Hey man I'm at work. Can you keep me updated on the game? So I would do an in game play by play for whatever game we were talking about sometimes even pitch by pitch. And he and I would text back and forth till the wee hours of the morning. He was a true baseball guy. he is 1 of the people that I would remember a situation at 2 o'clock in the morning and get my rule book and shoot him a text message hey this is what happened this is what the situation was here is how I handled it. We just talked whatever time it was. His job had him working some strange hours. He said it was nice to have someone to talk baseball with while the music blared around him. I am going to miss my friend

When I read the news of Mike's passing, needless to say I was stunned. I thought about posting right away, but having not known Mike(except for reading his posts...which I like everyone else took value in) I decided to wait... Like many others here I never had the pleasure of having any true one-on-one interaction with Mike, but I knew that whenever there was a good topic or a debatable post that he would add in some solid logic, reason, and value. It makes my heart sad to know that we have not just lost a brother in our umpiring world, but also the world in general has lost a good man. Umpiring has been good to me, and I am proud to say that one of my best friends in the world(even though he is 18 years my senior) has come from umpiring.  I think what I have enjoyed most out of this tragic news, is reading the stories from Jocko, and the others about how any time day or night they kept in touch with Mike and would talk not just about umpiring but any of life's daily issues.

It's sad that you join a community and two weeks later sh!t on the memory of someone instrumental in the community becoming what it's become.  Didn't you read the thread and consider how we would feel before taking a split-second and barfing all over your keyboard?

I'm sorry -- I know I should ignore stuff like this, but this post made me sad.  Sad that I never got to meet Mike and also sad for people like this, who probably doesn't care.

Renaming the Member of the Month award is exactly the right thing to do and even though I "won" this award before such a name change would take place, I would always associate it with Mike.

I'm an administrator of another board and I'm going to post a thread there in memory of Mike sometime today.  Any of you who know the board I'm talking about who are members are welcome to do the same.

Ladies and gentlemen...

I have spoken to Mike's brother Randy and have a couple of irons in the fire for things we can do. Including possibly a charity baseball tournament in the Salisbury, MD area to be staffed by volunteer Umpire-Empire umpires. So stay tuned.

In Mike's obituary it stated to make a donation to your local baseball association.

I am going to take this a different direction as well. I have set up a fundraising page at the American Heart Association to receive donations in memory of Mike.

The link can be found here : http://honor.americanheart.org/goto/michael_taylor

Please feel free to share this link with anybody you might know who is interested.

A heart attack to our friend away, but a donation to the American Heart Association in Mike's memory can help save others.

Warren, I appreciate your work here.  Please don't consider this a criticism of any kind.  I will try to be there to volunteer my services at any tournament that can be arranged.  People can donate to whatever cause they want -- I just want to clear up one thing that you posted.

The obituary requested donations to local Little Leagues.  This is cut and pasted from the obituary: "Contributions may be made in his memory to your local Little League."

Little League was very important to Michael, and I think it's important people consider the wishes in the obituary when they decide to make a donation.  Not everyone will seek out the obituary, after all.  I will be donating money to a local Little League in memory of Mike.
