21-year MLB veteran umpire Wally Bell has died of a heart ailment, according to Youngstown, Ohio's WKBN. He was 48 years old.

Born January 10, 1965 in Ravenna, Ohio, Bell (sleeve number 35) graduated from the Joe Brinkman Umpire School in 1984 and joined the Major League staff in 1992, appointed as a National League umpire. After working his first MLB All-Star game in 1997, Bell officiated his first Division Series in 1998, first Championship Series in 2000 and World Series in 2006. Having worked the 2013 World Baseball Classic final round in San Frandisco, All-Star Game and NL Division Series between the Cardinals and Pirates, Bell was on track for a potential return to the Fall Classic.

Bell, who volunteered for the American Heart Association, returned to baseball after undergoing open heart surgery in 1999. Bell is survived by his children Jason Patrick (8/10/99) and Lindsey Jane (9/27/00).

It's times like this where we truly see the brotherhood of umpiring come out. This isn't the same as losing another celebrity on television. We lost one of our own today. He started in Little League at the age of 17, just like many of us, and worked his way up the ranks.

My thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to Wally Bell's family and friends. In particular his two children, Jason (14) and Lindsey (13). I cannot even imagine what it must be like for them to go through this at such a young age.

RIP Wally

I can relate. I had a six way bypass at age 49. I'm a cholesterol machine no matter what my diet. God bless you Wally. You were a pleasure to watch work.

RIP Wally, and condolences to the Bell family and friends. As GD says, they (we) as umpires take our brotherhood and fraternity very seriously and are a tight knit group. All umpires lost a brother today, as well as a extraordinary, tenured professional umpire. I was shocked to hear this as he was so young at only 48. You will be remembered Wally, and I'm sure they will be wearing your WB patch just as soon as possible. It's not only a sad day in the world of umpiring, but in all of baseball.
