That's not the ASA softball-approved strike mechanic I normally see you use.

I hammer called strikes, point swinging strikes.

 

I've seen this with other umpires.  What's your reason for doing this?

I do it as well...I just casually stand up for a called strike, so I have more time and use the point.

I prefer the point, but if I'm working 1 man, I'll hammer so as not to turn my head away from the field.
Why would you turn your head when you point?

Some times it is just involuntary as you normally follow where you point with your eyes. Where your eyes go, your head usually goes. Otherwise it is a unique style, that Jim Evans says is a bad habit because you are taking your eye of the ball for a moment and all heck can break loose.
