I've just about gotten my hopes up to:

  • finding one at a yard sale
  • Craigslist from someone cleaning out a dead relatives stuff...........
  • Dumb luck

the standard methods have yet to turn one up......

I'm definitely not a gear guy, in fact I probably couldn't even tell you the brand name of most of the gear I have,  but to all you gear pimps,  stop the laughing,... whats the draw about the Ridell and why is it so sought after?

Mudder,

no worries ....

It's basically because it's made of "unobtainium" !!! :D

I've had one, and they're okay. It's the fact that they're very hard to come by that makes them desirable and expensive. The "cool factor", at its extreme.

I had a 1952 Fender Telecaster guitar, years ago. It is as a basic electric guitar as you can get. It's pickups were dated, by today's standards, and hardly stayed in tune. Today, it would command over $10K, just for the cool factor alone. If it was just another guitar, it would fetch around $100, given it's quality.

A few years back, the +POS SUL mask was the cool piece of gear. I sold one for big bucks, But then lighter masks came on-line, and now you can't give them away.

So be carful what you covate. It may not hold it's value forever. Then again, it just might. But if some new protection device becomes the next standard, our hardshells may just go the way of the raft. It could happen.

At some point I may decide to sell mine.  I'm liking the Force3, but want a full season with it.  Seems a shame to have a Power with TW retrofit sitting here not getting used, but I probably would regret selling it.

I'd give it a 50/50 shot at selling.

Honestly, There's a segment of umpires who have the need to have stuff like this. And some cats have the dough to do it. God bless America, I say. I've got obscene amounts of $ for one of these, an SUL, Hardwick drawers, and an ol' Douglas. If you've got the dough, why not get what you want?
