In 4-umpire mechanics, U2 needs to get inside, at the cutout, with the throw coming toward (but not directly at!) him, with an angle to see the hand, tag, and base.

If U2 goes out, U3 would rotate over to the same position.

As usual, CCA is a better source for mechanics than the MLB guys (who can umpire standing on their heads).

You can also take it from the outside -- but I wouldn't teach taking it way it was in the video.

Agree: if you can't get to the best spot, stay outside and get an angle on the tag play. That look is inferior, since you don't have the ball in front of you.

But I agree it's still better than the country stroll mechanic. ;)

just something I've noticed ..........

why do some of the MLB guys stare at the players after calling them out?  I just don't get it .....

I think they're just staying with the play, and it's not a bad idea after players start shaving. You never know when a kid/guy who's pissed about a call is going to do something stupid, and you want eyes on that.

He was exactly where he needed to be, a little late but correct. You can't stay outside, that's the throwing lane. Can't take it from C side, SS is there. The only thing to do is get to his right and inside.

Plus that is where the ball is and you definitely want eyes on that.

no.. in 4 man, stay outside put your self , just like a play at the plate, on the Fielders left hip.. this way you'll see a tag...

this is an advanced mechanic.. ask before you try this at home kids.

Also the CCA is a reference book... there are a bunch of advanced mechanics that are not in the book.

I suppose the "walking out call " is a super advanced mechanic that we shouldn't try at home??

Bottom line, Joe got the call right. The announcer's said so.

To be in his pocket he still has to come inside. He chose to come all the way around to his right side. I don't think you get a look if you stay on his left. If you watch him coming in he had no thought that the BR would try to go to second. And as the announcer said, he shouldn't have either.

Yes, Joe was caught by surprise, as was everyone else. Surprise is our enemy.

Mike his left hip pocket is on the outfield side... he should be taking this play on the dirt not on the inside.

But my point was he assumed he wasn't coming so he was just doing a routine mone inside and all of a sudden he had to pick up the pace and get an angle.
