That's not the Mariners announcers, it's the Sox radio crew, Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson, who in general are FAR better than Hawk. Ed was the one with the....charitably saying, confusion on the obstruction. Maybe he's got FED on the brain. Let's give him credit for at least not calling it interference!

Great call and not as easy as it looks. We have a high tag and clearly seeing which happened first the tag of the player or the touch of the base is not the easiest thing to do.

I'm just trying to figure out in what world (or rule set) this would even be considered for obstruction -- hell, the fielder had the BALL before there was contact and there was nothing slowing the runner before that, either.

Although what you say is true, it rather misses noumpere's point. Since F2 has given the runner access, the umpire need not worry about whether F2 has the ball at the moment of contact: either way, there cannot be OBS.

 

Giving the runner access to the base makes possession of the ball moot (except, of course, for tag/no tag).
