It looked like he had good positioning and timing.

 

A few weeks a go in a HS game I had a similar situation. Routine grounder to 3rd, clean throw to 1st, I'm thinking in my head he's going to be out. Ball arrives a step a head of the runner and I call "Safe!" and give the safe mechanic. 

 

Then I'm having my own personal WTF moment. Surprisingly, I only got a "Really?" from the first base coach.

Well, it is good to hear that other professional umpires in other leagues and speeds of play miss one every now and then. I miss them too even in the wiffle ball league

 

It is ok to anticipate the play that is developing, you should just try not to anticipate the call itself. Of course you know that, but things happen, and this is more for the new guys here.

 

I believe MLB would still allow the umpire, if he felt forced, to go into foul territory on this type of call rather than the 2 steps fair positioning. There is no guarantee that this umpire would have made the correct call in that position either.

 

Can I get an affirmative or negative from the guys in the know that this play could be called from either fair territory or foul territory or is foul territory taboo now and dark ages positioning? I ask this for the young guys. Also for the young guys, if moving into foul is still acceptable, in a 2 man, with nobody on and an overthrow, you would have to bust into the infield behind the runner on an overthrow if the plate guy stays with the ball.

If the plate guy tells you to take the ball, then he has the runner to 2nd, since he can be in fair territory coming up the line and already be ahead of the runner.

Or is still acceptable to go foul if needed. In two man,I prefer that the PU take the runner.
