Question

Posted

Had this happen to me tonight.

I'm behind the plate.  1 out.  R1 at 2nd R2 at 1st.  Ground ball to F6, he bobbles the ball so badly that his throw to 2nd is too late to get the force on R2.  R2 slides so hard that he overslides the base and into the fielder who is hurt and does not tag him.  He quickly crawls back to the bag before he is tagged.  What would you call?

It would have been helpful if someone gave you the FPSR ruling - both R1 and batter are ruled out.

And R2 (who was labeled R1 in the OP) returns to second.

Unless of course that play now resulted in three outs.  That part should be obvious but given the confusion in some other thread about multiple runners on a base I thought I should add it.

edit: I see the OP had 1 out to start, so of course this play results in three outs if it was a FPSR rule

R1 - 2 Outs

We have a pickle between first and second.  As he's retreating to first, he's obstructed by a big 'ole first basemen in the baseline.  He eventually gets back to first safely.  Should he be awarded second.  OBR by the way.  I think I was talked out of making the correct ruling by my partner.

A play was being made so yes the runner gets second, and the ball is dead, and other runners are put where you think they would have ended up.

In this particular play doesn't matter that it was OBR or FED or NCAA.

I thought that was the correct ruling, but I let him talk me out of it anyway.  I've looked it up today.  7.06B or 8.3.1 (Fed).

Thanks

For OBR it's 7.06A.  If a runner is in a rundown it's because a play is being made on that runner.

Doesn't malicious contact factor into this?  According to the scenario, SS was injured by the slide.....

Sometime contact happens. Doesn't make it MC.

Sometimes someone gets hurt. Doesn't mean it was MC.

MC usually requires a judgement of intent to injure or dislodge the ball.  I see neither here.
