  1. By law, anything you earn as an IC is taxable income; just because you make less than $600. doesn't mean it's not taxable income...it only means the IRS hasn't received a copy of a 1099. Businesses, schools, etc that employ IC's may not have to issue 1099 for income below $600., but that doesn't preclude them from doing so if they so desire.
  2. No law against it, but you can certainly write off anything related to that clinic; miles, cost of meals, etc.
  3. Jax, Heard a lot of good things about that tournament. How does one get involved? Thanks....
  4. Doesn't malicious contact factor into this? According to the scenario, SS was injured by the slide.....
  5. That freeze frame shows text book perfect positioning by the plate umpire....I would love a framed picture of that for my office !
  6. I think this is why we are going to see more "reviews" in baseball, I'm afraid....with the advent of multiple cameras at every conceivable angle, super slo-mo where you can see guys out or safe by a "gnat's eyelash" ( all you old-timers out there....anyone know what play by play announcer that came from? Hint: Iron City Beer's home town). Slo-mo has him safe, I think, but because the ball got there well ahead of the runner and the tag was up the line a bit (albeit applied too high), is the reason no one argued, I'm guessing....
  7. Wow, I just posted this late last night and got quite a response....thanks so much...I will definitely be frequenting this site more often, if not daily.....but getting back to 7.07 where there is a runner trying to steal home or being squeezed and the catcher steps in front of the runne..... in addition to the CI, the rule also requires a balk be called on the pitcher....anyone out there explain me the logic on that? Thanks....
  8. I saw a play the other day.... R1 attempts to steal second (no other runners on base), pitcher delivers, catcher, in his haste to nail runner at second, leapts forward out in front of the plate, catches pitch before it reaches the plate and fires to second. In this case, runner still beat the throw. Umpire did not make a ruling, let play stand. My take is: catcher interference, runner is awarded second ( since he successfully stole the base, that would be moot) and batter is awarded first base. The closest thing I could find regarding this play is rule 7.07, but this rule refers to a runner on third attempting to steal or runs home on a squeeze, whereby catcher jumps in front or on the plate without the ball..... Rule 6.08(c) states that a batter is entitled to first base without liability to be put out when he is interfered with by the catcher. It would appear in my scenario above that he does in fact interfere with the batter's ability to hit the ball, therefore CI should be called..... Rule 7.07 also refers to a balk on behalf of the pitcher....again, is this only in that one play where the runner on third is attempting to steal home? I think I'm overthinking this thing !
  9. Greetings, Group: Now that I've put my basketball attire away, I'm prepping for my first love, umpiring...been a member here a while, but haven't contributed, hope to do so often in the future. I'm a member of a couple organizations here in Delaware...was wondering if there are organizations in my area who are looking for a first rate umpire? I've more years experience than care to count, done all levels from LL to Varsity HS to Legion, along with a few fall league college games.... I also travel throughout the northeast region of the US on business, and carry my equipment wherever I go, so if there are organizations in Virginia, NJ, PA, CT, MA, etc who occasionally have holes to fill, if you send me sufficient notice I can get back to you.....thanks.
  10. Base umpire is totally wrong, on a number of levels. First, he has no business calling the batter out whether he interfered or not....this was the PU call. BU should've conferred with his partner, informing him that pitcher disengaged, therefore play should've continued....BU and PU can discuss whether batter intentionally allowed himself to get hit ( I suspect that to be unlikely ). The play should've been allowed to evolve, with runner safe on the steal, batter remains at bat. However, if the PU killed the play before runner touched home, I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "correctable error" or not. As far as adding a ball to the count, that is totally wrong, since pitcher stepped off, making him just another fielder. Also, technically, if there are two out and the batter interfered on a play at the plate, the runner would be out, whereby the batter would lead off the next inning.... less than two out, batter is out and runner returns to third.
