Hey guys, from yesterdays Tigers v. Blue Jays game

I'm watching and I see Angel has a Snap-Back Hat on...I didn't know that this was even an option.

Probably so he can adjust it if he needs to pull the hood up over his head.

I was thinking that too when I saw this yesterday, Mike!

I thought to myself,...."it MUST have something to do with his cold weather gear!"

Or he has a melon..............Ive got a guy in my assoc who must wear an 8 1/4 ++...he wears an adjustable on the last notch

We called those "Elmer Fudds"..............first association issued hat was a foam and mesh adjustable hat with the word umpire on it.............(80's).....along with my T-shirt and polyester 2 snap coach shorts............I have met  "smitty"........and he was me!..........

Wonder if its the trucker style with the foam in the front and the mesh in the back   :rock

Thats great info!

And yes, he nailed the call!

MLB keeps a few universal items in the umpire room in case there is an issue with equipment arriving. For instance, last year at a game I was at in TO, PU came out in his normal gear but the BUs came out with snap back hats and unnumbered 1/4 zip pullovers with shoulder stripes (think therma base without lining), despite the roof being closed - FYI, it can get very hot on the field in Rogers Centre with the roof closed. In the third inning, a guy with a suit came out of the 1B dugout and got the attention of the crew chief; all 3 umpires then went into the dugout and presumably to the locker room. When they re-emerged, they were wearing numbered cool base jackets and full back hats.

As suggested, he probably grabbed the snap back so it could fit over his thermal hood. Good call on this play too.
