Am I the only one who sees the runner "up with his left arm" on the F2 ????  That's what knocks F2 off balance, ....watch the runners left arm ....that's intentional, no question

I'm not sure if it was quite enough to eject the runner on the initial slide - wouldn't argue if you did, would understand if you didn't - but he sure as heck is getting run for coming back and shovin

My impression from the video is that the slide was legit - though he certainly didn't make any great effort to avoid contact. From what I can see from the video, F2 should have gotten out of the way and he's definitely toast.

 

No way I'm grabbing him in that sitch. (Didn't much care for the PU's "bat fling" either.)

F2 is gone.  The slide certainly looked like he was starting to go for F2 but decided not to.    I think the slide is legit also.  I'm not grabbing anybody.  I'm stepping back and taking names/nos.  JM, what do you dislike about the bat flip?  I'm not being a smart aleck, I just want to learn.  I do the flip also when I have time.

The slide is legal IMO. F2 is history and this game is over because everyone who came out is also summarily chunked. Neither team probably have enough players to finish. Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy :lol:

You don't really have to move it all that far, and you don't want to throw it blindly where you might hit someone.

For the record, and this is strictly from memory (yea yea. Shut up), but I believe I recall PBUC2MAN covers this. Says to throw the bat between your legs to the backstop, or something to that effect. I'm probably wrong, and Steve D is gonna show me up (again).

What I was demonstrated at a Jim Evans clinic was to go to a knee and slide it backwards with your right arm besides your right leg. That allows you (us folks that can't straddle and still look up) to keep an eye on the play.

I don't have a problem with wrapping F2 up, I have done it myself. I worked concert security for years and my training kicks in. If more join, get out and take names.

Regarding the bat, the "proper" way to clear it is to approach if accessible and necessary, straddle it, and slide it backward between your legs while keeping your eyes on the play the entire time. While we're talking mechanics, notice PU also makes his fair-foul call without moving.

 

Regarding the altercation, I break up too many fights / scrums in the months of September - April to say that I would not have instinctively jumped in once it was clear F2 was going to go after the runner. I think at least intervening solely by stepping in F2's way in an attempt to physically prevent F2 from going after the runner, especially since his back was turned, is completely reasonable. Although since there is no "3rd man in" rule in baseball, if the situation got larger than just F2 and the runner, I'm bailing.

 

While I understand that everybody is sensitive about physical contact with players because of our lawsuit-happy society, and I understand that some have no interest in physically intervening in a confrontation, PU single-handedly prevented a mass brawl - a la Canada-Mexico - from breaking out simply by corralling the catcher before he could go after a defenseless opponent. I don't think anybody should be faulting him for that. If he doesn't remove F2 from the situation, you likely end up with a massive dog-pile, presenting serious risk of injury for all involved. Believe it or not, I actually see greater potential for legal action if the catcher had've been allowed to wail away on the runner after going right past PU, unrestrained.

Talk to Dave, Harry's taught us a nice ay, you bend down almost kneeling while keeping your head and eyes up watching the play, grab the bat, and slide it backwards... I still use it and it works very nice.

Absolutely, but by the same token he is camping on the plate. 

possibly ....but I must say I can't tell from the camera angle ....F2 is moving forward hands raised....tough to really get a good idea of exactly where he is IMHO ;)

Unless F2 now gets hurt because your tackled him.  Now you're 100% liable for injuring a player.  

 

Not me.  No thanks.

I don't see that anyone said tackle him.  Just get in his way and use your arms so he needs to think about what hes doing if he tries to go around you.

No freakin' way I'm putting hands on F2, here. If he was about to beat a runner about the head with a bat, maybe. Think of all the uniform numbers he could be writing instead.
