"Don't Suck"

I've been noticing a trend ........

 

I've been noticing that this fraternity of ours loves to say "don't suck" when referencing someones big game, or big promotion, etc, etc ....

 

Well, I searched the forum and found that saying 32 times within U-E.

 

Why does this term seem to be a part of 'umpire-speak' ??

Maybe it's similar to the Roman Army's "Strength and Honor" (Gladiator!), or Notre Dame's "Play Like A Champion, Today!", except with us it's "Don't Suck".

That reminds me of one I used to hear and use from time to time....

I always liked the one my old mentor used to say to me.............."good luck today boys .....dont get your name in the paper."................

 

which if you think about it....means "dont suck".

I'm sure Different groups do different things . Last yr was my first with our HS group and every game I worked with the "vets" the base guy would always ask for my brush and brush off HP before the meeting . It wa always kind of awkward when they did that . A 2 inch punch for the PU on his CP as well before the BU takes his position pre pitch .

Another friend of mine says " go do the voodoo that you do so well. "


What do I say '? "Don't suck . " I picked that up here .

I was in the HS marching band, and the band paraded behind the home bleachers before entering the field for pregame... My mom would sit on the top row of the bleachers and as we passed, would shout out "DON'T SUCK MATT!!" plenty loud enough for the entire 100-member marching band plus the student section to hear.

I absolutely DETEST that phrase. Like I'm going to go out and have a crap game, unless you remind me not to suck.

I picked it up here and told it to a fellow teacher at work who was having a group of principals observe her teaching a lesson.

 

It's quite universal.

 

As for association oddities, one way the vets break up the tension of a young guy's big game is by U1 covering the plate with dirt the first time we have a 3-man rotation where PU heads to 3rd and U1 heads home.

When there are almost no games in my future, and it's going to be like that through 2016, it's hard to get on here and banter.  Especially when my season would be starting right now if I were in Virginia.  I tend to log on a LOT less these days.
