Ok guys,

I know that the year has wound down for most of you. And for those happy few that live in the sunbelt myself included this topic is still holds firm. We all can get up for the season and summer time when it comes to working out. But do you change your workout in the off season versus in-season? Does your workout change as the weather gets colder? What do you think is the biggest pit fall for officials physically? Do you even work out at all? And finally what is your reasoning behind your choices?

I have started running 3x per week to lose some weight.

I don't have time during the season to "work out" ....during the season is when I trim down the best ....it's the off season where I have to show some effort! :)

The biggest thing for umpires IMO is not being able to run. I've started doing some treadmill sessions to get in better shape and help control my asthma. It helps tremendously. No officials need to be jacked out of their mind (except Hochuli) running on the treadmill will help burn calories, trim stomach fat and for those with asthma it will help it stay controlled when you do start the season.

I will agree that running is a big thing as a whole for most if not all officials. Cuban I'm glad you brought up yoga and/or stretching because I think it's something that many guys over look not only during season but out of season. The reason I bring this up is I help a lot of guys in my units and they all ask me why its so important it doesn't help me call balls or strikes. I think this can be our greatest detriment. No it can't but it can get you in the best position, elongate your career, expand your career because of perception and make you feel better after games or in those dog day games. Oh yea as well as oh I dunno your life. I personally don't think its just an in-season/out-season issue. I have a corporate job and as I'm sure you can see by my post I was up until 1a and now I'm awake at 7 that's just life. But I still find time to workout for an hour doing strength training and go for at least a 3 mile run, with stretching before and after 5 times a week. I workout with other umpires to keep them and myself inspired. I do functional workouts to not get into ruts and only have fitness in a single facet. Being a sports official means that we get to be between the lines for our passion and potentially watch some of the best athletes of their generation play at any given level. Furthermore we as baseball umpires get to be stopped for the play, which means we need to work twice as hard and smarter then others to afford that luxury and be in the best positioning possible. And IMHO you can't do that without proper training and fitness both in season and out. Ok rant off. Just my $0.02

I ran more miles than I can count when I was in the service. I vowed never to run again. However, I do windsprints 3x a week. As umpires, we don't need the stamina to run a marathon, but the twitch muscles and low end to sprint short distances. I cardio 5x a week on an ellyptical trainer and do some very light lifting.

For xmas, I'm getting myself the Insanity DVDs (unless someone has a set to spare?). I am plenty big enough, just need to trim down.

Stretching is uber-important (: It helps prevent injury, strains, and pulled muscles. Not to mention shin-splints.

Tread climber 3X a week, weighted lunges 3X a week, light weightlifting, I walk at least 1 miler per day.

Lunges are the best for behind the plate. I will also do sprints 5-10 yards while coaching my sons soccer team.

i stretch every day, thats makes a big difference.

I never stab, I am a shooter. Stabbing causes persperation.

I walk almost every day. Yesterday was an hour and 3 miles. I walk outside and that brings some hills and dales. As February approaches I start lifting in the screen porch, doing many knee bends with 60 to 80 pounds on my shoulders. I want strong legs for the season. 1 year ago I was 264 pounds, now I am 215 on my way to 200. All walking and eating less. Same foods, just less.

Like Trout said, I was in service and will never run again unless being chased and out of ammo. Light weights, high rep for me. If you can walk for 30 minutes in the morning you will burn calories all day.

Just DO It!!

I was at MCRD San Diego. We ran 3 miles before a.m. chow. My brother went to Great Mistakes :P and complained that they ran 5 miles a week!

Only way I'm running is if an animal is after me. Never run from any man, you'll just get shot in the back and die tired.

A few general thoughts:

* Working basketball is a great way to stay in shape during the off season.

* I've become a bit of an evangelist for nerdfitness.com lately. It's a great blog chock full of practical fitness information that caters to a crowd other than the usual health and fitness types.

* Interval workouts and resistance training are important. Anaerobic exercise is great for increasing metabolism and increasing fitness.

I work three sports so I don't find as much time to workout as I should especially when I'm in midseason of my respective sport but one of the concepts I've tried to incorporate is that there is always a way to find time to get a workout in.

Who needs workouts? I exercise when I'm on the field...

I just got the P90x and have taken some bikram yoga classes. Being a college student with a free gym and plenty of muscle heads also helps to get one in shape.

I hate to run and despise walking, neither holds any interest for me. However, I have no problem with treadmill work. I completely agree that stretching is one of the best things we can do.

I moved a good TV near the treadmill, and I catch up on all my 30 minute sitcoms. But outside walking I have enjoyed in my neighborhood. I get to see neighbors and things going on the 4 mile circle that I tend to walk, that keeps it interesting to me. I put on Pandora Iphone radio ap and cruise and sightsee. Try it with that attitude and maybe you will like it.

To each there own, I really don't care if a guy want to go play catch with his boy, swim, bike, dance, sex or whatever to get cardio for an hour a day but I employ my guys to find something that they find enjoyable that can give them cardio and do it.

This winter I'm being surprisingly lazy. Hopefully I'm going to get back into it soon. I'm at my lowest weight in I don't even remember in how long. Right before Thanksgiving I was set to break the 200 lb barrier, but that hasn't happened yet.

I want to start getting back into it. For 2013 one of my to do items is to run in the Armed Services YMCA 8K Mud Run. 2014 I want to do the Tough Mudder, hopefully with my little brother depending on his next duty station.

On Mon & Wed mornings I attend cardiac wellness sessions that were prescribed by my Dr after the bypass surgery. On Tue & Thur I attend a physiotherapy clinic and do exercises for recurring back & knee problems. Left knee was replaced 2 yrs ago. On Fri I go to a local indoor track and walk for about an hour. When the Cardiac Wellness ends at the end of Jan I am eligible to enter an open ended cardiac maintenance program at our local sports complex. None of these programs have any user fees, they are courtesy of our provincial health care system. The physiotherapy is payed for by health insurance that was carried on by my employer after I retired. So all in all I am not in bad shape for the shape i'm in. :)
