When and where do you wear those white masks?  Catching in men's league?

What are the two "old school" masks in the bottom row for?  "Old timer's day" and "throwback" games?

Those two "vintage" masks are the ones you pull out to shock your (new) partner.

Especially amusing when your partner tries to weasel his way out of doing a plate game by saying he forgot his mask / it's broken, etc.

The white mask? Dude, that thing would look badass... Like Insane Clown Posse or Ghostface Killa... especially with black shirts.

My apologies Thunderheads for not sticking to the format. Here is the run down, left to right, top to bottom:

1. Wilson A3077 LoPro cage powder coated in frost white with All Star Pads 704g - It usually has a gray harness and gray 4" throat guard- It is used on exceptionally warm days (100+). Say whatever you want. On those days I give zero f%$ks what anyone thinks, and coolness and comfort are the priority. Oh, and I hate beige pads

2. Tag Battle Gear cage powder coated in frost white and pads 806g-This mask is a originally a TAG catchers mask. My very first mask. It usually sports a navy bottom pad and harness and I wear it for a forth of July round robin tournament I do every year.

3. Wilson WTA3009X cage with Black/Doeskin Pads, MLB Harness, 4" Throat Guard 880g - a.k.a. "The Tank" - My first "real" umpire mask. Purchased when I started seeing 80+ mph pitches delivered to 50 mph catchers on a regular basis.

4. Diamond DFM-43 Cage powder coated in Gun Metal Gray with Black All Star Pads, MLB Harness, 4" Throat Guard 754g - This is my everyday driver.

5. Markwort MS54 Cage with Black Markwort Pads 716g (w/o harness) - Purchased at a garage sale, added new pads. I break it out when I have a new partner, or an old partner who "forgot" his mask. (And yes I have the ballon to go with it in case they "forgot" a CP too).

6. Origin unknown with markwort softball fielders mask pads 499g - I am told it was made in the 40's - It may actually be a mask used for baseball or it may be a field hockey mask. Both look very similar in pic's. It's a head turner regardless on the softball field. It looks best hanging in my shop with the others.

7. Wilson Silver Dyna-Lite Aluminum with black Wilson memory foam pads, MLB Harness, 4" Throat Guard 548g - Newest addition - Nothing more to say - It is perfect!

I too prefer dark pads with light/silver frames and vice versa but I have used my tan doeskin pads in silver mask in summer day games to try and stay a little cooler. Not the best look but still not bad.

And, I'm starting to really like the light grey pads with both black and silver masks. Wish they came in doeskin.

I've actually asked Brad at All-Star to make tan and grey LUC pads .....

Nice ...however,.... wouldn't it look nicer w/ the black pads on the silver frame?  Just my .02 ....

@Thunderheads, you are right.  I had black pads with my silver mask before switching them out.  @Majordave - Did the silver mask and tan pads do anything for you temperature wise?  If not, I'll go back to the black pads.  Figured I would see if it would make any difference.  Also, when I moonlight with softball on the side, especially with ASA, they want a black mask with black pads.  I don't know what it is with ASA, but they just have their little quirks I guess.

Yes they do.  Which is why I am concentrating more on baseball than softball.  I don't know how many of you gents do softball on here but if you have done enough, you will have run into at least one ASA-mechanic umpire/evaluator who will tell you everything that you are doing wrong and what you should do to fix it.

No SH*# right here, middle of a hot summer day doing a game with ASA mechanics.  I'm starting to get a little tired and put my hands on my hips while I'm catching my breath.  I get told by the evaluator that "hands-on-hips" is not an ASA mechanic.  I was like, "You got to be SH*#ting me, Private Pyle".

I think in direct sunlight the light tan pads absorb less heat and thus feel cooler.  Unfortunately, I am usually sporting a black wool hat that attracts a LOT of heat.  But the mesh hats look like crap and from my coaching days I never noticed them being much cooler anway.  So I just tough it out.  It is still cooler than a football helmet on a hot day.  Boy I still remember those days now.  More than thirty-five years later.

I do softball for the money... thats it.  I had a softball coach chirping at me down the line one day and i yelled back ... he looked at me like a shot his dog.  Its just a different world.  Somebody told me one time that I wouldn't get any playoff games because i didn't verbalize my strike mechanic in the squat and then stand up to make a crisp hammer signal above my head.  I fell into the Alan Iverson rant "PLAYOFF'S, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PLAYOFFS??????"   I also like wearing my not black mask, west vest with the w hangin out of the powder blue shirt, and base shoes with white all over them.  All discouraged points of emphasis for softball officiating attire.

I also think the DP/FLEX is the dumbest, most confusing, idiotic rule ever implemented into any sport in the history of competition.  Sorry of the rant about softball on a mask post, but i couldnt resist myself.

Off-topic or not, no judgment from me. DP/FLEX is probably the biggest reason I only did softball for one year.

I should get it and wear it in a softball tournament.

Common ASA-mechanic kool-aid drinker comment right there.  Forget the fact you made a correct call - you didn't do something an exact certain way...and if you did, I'm sure you didn't have your hand a certain way, or you had a white logo on your mask pads, or you don't have your Fechheimer pants on <-- that's a big one.  Pleated pants are T-A-B-O-O with the ASA die-hards.  I am with you on this one.  I do softball for the money, period.  I do baseball because I can enjoy it...and for some money.

You all have no imagination. I'm buying that mask and the orange shirt from TOC. I will rock them both at my first solo game!!!

I do softball. I don't call strikes down, I have never hammered a strike, and I will be damned if I change the color and cut of my pants to look like a "real softball umpire". My evaluators complain every time, but they keep calling me for games. I love fastpitch, but baseball allows some freedoms. It's easy to respect. Softball is just to rigid with no good reason to be. It always makes me laugh that all of the little things that make you look like a good baseball umpire , make you look like a bad softball umpire. I just assume look like a descent baseball umpire even if I'm on a bocce ball field.

I posted my primary gamer mask on this thread earlier but the rig has ben modified a bit so I thought it would be a good time to show off it's current look. I affectionately refer to her as "The Beast". She's a Nike Titanium frame that I've frankensteined out by re-welding the front loops to the primary cross bars and bending down just slightly the bottom left side of the primary cross bar to help it fit my hand a little better when pointing with the mask. Most notably I chopped the chin off and put a Mizuno shovel throat guard on it that was originally navy due to the next to zero inventory that anyone has on the black ones. I painted it black and painted the straps to match. This picture was taken after the entire spring season and she was showing a little wear on the paint but I was pretty pleased with how well it help up through around 60 plate jobs. I repainted it after a quick sanding and it looks good as new now. She is wearing a Nike harness with Black leather Belgard pads. I'll try and get my roommate to post pictures of his Nike, it's the evil twin sister to my mask.large.my_mask.jpg.e4b0ff94fd2cbf61170b73

Well I couldn't get my roommate to post it himself but he did give me permission to post it on here. So here it is. His mask is the one on the right. It's a Nike Titanium frame that has been unmodified except for the chopped chin and painted black. He did the same thing for his Mizuno throat guard that I did as described in the post above. His lady is also wearing Belgards pads in a two-tone variety with a Nike harness as well. His sunshield is painted a semi-gloss black and he took the patch off of the back of an old Wilson harness and sewed it to the front of his mask pad. Also pictured bottom left is my mask as pictured in the above post but with a little modification I forgot to mention. I took a Wilson patch from an old set of pads and sewed it to the front. The mask above it the very same Mizuno that I have posted in the buy, sell, trade section.large.Mask_porn.jpg.9562efbdc55ec9c4b66d
