The OC does it again

There has been some talk about the placement of our nation's flag on uniforms. Everyone has their own opinions which is great. Some think that it's ok to wear a patch on the sleeve, others (me and Finnerty) say that the flag patch should be reserved for the uniforms of those who sacrifice for our nation.

I was browsing the net for umpire stuff and came across this:

How can a retailer be taken seriously when they make shirts like this? This is embarrassing, loud, and inexcusable. A patch is one thing, but to wear a flag?

Only Kid Rock does this.

I don't know about you guys, but I intend on writing them a pretty lengthy email.

One more reason why I shop at legitimate retailers. God bless the red, white, blue, and soon to be: purple.

Somehow that seems to violate the flag code on all levels.......

The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

I'm as patriotic as the next guy. I even get to come to work every morning, and contribute to our national defense in real time.

Say what you wish about wearing the flag, but just from an umpire perspective that thing is an unwanted distraction on the field. I have, and will continue to wear my pink shirt, but they drew a line in the dirt on this one, and I'm ejecting it from the park.

Maybe I'm off base, and it will look fine with their near-black pants. Naw.

It would be a great shirt for a 4th of July tourney or Memorial or Veterans Day weekend tourneys. Similar to the Pink for breast cancer recognition.

I can't find enough adjectives to describe how bad this shirt is. Green, brown, and maroon shirts and crappy, ill-fitting pants are bad enough, but this takes the cake.

The wearing of the flag patch reversed or Backwards/stars to the front. Is to show that is how the flag fly's when it s was carried by soldiers when in formation on there way to battle. or as it waves int he breeze. not as a way to show sacrifice..

if you want to show sacrifice , Hold your head high during the National Anthem, or tell people to STFU during the National Anthem.. you will hear a cool story From Jim about Jorge Posada and Ted Barrett about the National Anthem.

As a Former US Army guy, I'm very patriotic.

As far as the OC flag shirt goes, it's just ugly. Is it proper to wear it? I don't care. If it's done in a positive manner, with respect, it's all good. Those that want to drag out the Flag Code, that's fine too. Do what you want.

My Pop had a similar shirt, which he busted out on the Fourth of July (he still might have it). And he's the first guy on his feet when the flag goes by, and sings the National Anthem LOUDLY at sporting events. He's ex-Army, worked at the Pentagon, White House, and all those three letter agencies. I'll trust his judgement on what's proper.

But the OC is just loud. Pink is one thing. It's just a color. But the pattern on the flag shirt is too busy and distracting for the ballfield, IMO.

Again, IMO, we need neutral colors out there, so we blend in. Light blue is awful. Black works. I've seen green shirts, and they're actually good looking. Brown doesn't work with gray slacks (nor does cream). Gray works, if it's the right shade.

all I said was in my opinion. Didn't mean anything on the capital lock. Served in the USMC. And I respect your opinion and everybody else's opinion. Don't let this ruin your day. I have never and will never wear any clothing that is a flag. I have sacrificed too much and know others that have done the same to do that. I personally find it disrespectful. and irreverent However, if others choose wear a flag, I defended that right too. This freedom does not extend to those that choose to burn the flag.

I am fine with wearing a pink shirt or aqua wrist bands to show support for a cause. I have donated game fees to these causes and others. I must say if wearing one of these shirts was a requirement of the game I would quietly have to pass on that and show my support in a more quiet and respectful manner (the same way I served my 22 years).

I'm not a really big fan of the shirt, but it wouldn't bother me if other people wore it.

As for the code, I interpret it as not doing what the earlier pic of Kid Rock is doing, not having a stars and stripes design.

I've seen a number of tasefull clothing articles done with a US flag. SOmeone mentioned the Ryder cup but also olympians and more.

Is there anything written anywhere saying I cannot wear an HSM or a pink shirt? No, there isn't. There very well could be where you work if you are apart of an association. If so, by all means, follow the rules.

If the MLB guys came out with them, I wouldn't be too happy. The MLB guys are also in violation, themselves, of flag code.

Are there rules stating it isn't proper wear a flag shirt? Well... yes. Guys, let it be known: there are rules governing the flag. They are very explicit rules. The ones that are being brought up here are §3. Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag as well as §8. Respect for flag

in the US Code Chapter 4 Chapter 1.

§3. Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag

...The words "flag, standard, colors, or ensign", as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent.

§8. Respect for flag

j. No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

That's pretty black and white isn't it? So, let it be known, by you wearing this shirt, you are in violation of the flag code, by using it for an unintended purpose. I don't know about you guys, but I don't intend on doing that. I also don't intend on wearing a patch on any shoulder, unless I have to in order to work. Why not do a three man crew and have each umpire wear a different color of the flag? Plus, this thing is just ugly. The flag just doesn't look good like that, it belongs on a flag pole.

What I meant Mazz, was the wearing of the flag patches should be reserved for the uniforms of service men and women of all branches of the military, fire, police, and EMTs, as it states in the flag code. I've given up trying to fight it and have given up being put off about it. The NCAA does it all the time, the MLB guys have it on their hats, and a lot of baseball teams have it on their as well, not to mention MiLB has their patch on their backs.
